BOXING D AY SPORTS.

The sports yosterday in Morgan's paddock were a great success. Fortunately the weather, which looked very unpromising in the morning, cleared up early in the day, and before one o'clock the ground was in capital order. Thor i was a large gathering of peopU* , and every one, both old and younjj, se mcd 10 on joy themselves thoroughly. If there had been time to give more publicity to the affair there would no doubt have 'been a larger muster of visitors, the number of whom was comparatively few, but of Te Aroha and and Waiorongomai residents there must have been from 400 to 500 present Considering that the sports were got up in an almost impromptu manner, and that they came off so quickly after the races, it must be admitted they ware highly successful, and the Committee deserve great credit for their endeavour to afford to the residents "a" pleasant day's amusement. Prizes amounting in all to about £25 were competed for, in addition to which were calces and lollies for the youngsters, who mustered in great force, and showed up well in the athletic part of the arrangements. The principal eVeiit of the day was the. Cup Race for £8 in which there were seven competitors, viz ; Messrs Hyde, Brenan, Hawkins, Coleman, .Quinlan, Johnson, and Whitehouse. ' It was run in heats of 100, 200, and 300 yards, in which the successful 'competitors were placed as follows, viz. : at 100 v yards— , Hyde; 1 ; Brenan % ' Hawkins, 3. ' 200 yards — Coleman 1, Hyda 2, Johnson 3. B|oo yards-^Hyde 1, Whit'elionse 2'Oole.t'nan'3.
