DIRECT STEAM SERVICE. Arrangements to Give Auckland a Share of the Steamers.
Some correspondence with respect to the participation of Auckland in the direct steam service has taken place during the last few days between the Chairman of the Harbour Board and the manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, The following telegram from the Company was received several days ago by the Board: — "We are now considering future movements of steamers in connection with direct mail service before definitely deciding ports of arrival and departure. Would be glad to know if your Board will consent to forego all port charges and pilotage on any of our steamers entering the port of Auckland.—J. L. Costek," The Chairman replied, asking whether the concessions sought for were allowed mother ports, and stating that the Board would, he thought, be willing to meet the Company as to dues and other matters if satisfactory arrangements were made as to this port being made a dep6t to the Company. To this Mr Coster replied as follows ;—; — * Thanks for your telegram. We are communicating with other Harbour Boards, and will advise you later on, Meantime, expect to make such arrangements as will give Auckland a full share of our swift direct steamers. — J. L. Coster."
