Melbourne, Dec. 8. — Mauritius advices to November 19 are to hand by the steamship Salazie. Under that date, Messrs Ireland, Fraser, and Co. report of the sugar market as follows :— Market firm, Accounts of incoming crops favourable. The month's engagement includes 800 tons for Dunedin. The clearances during the month for New Zealand ports are : 300 tons for Dunedin, and 600 for Auckland. Exchange, 60 days. Bank credits : New Zealand, 15 per cent. ; Australian, 17 per cent. Premium stock of sugar in hand, 35,000 tons. Exports this season to New Zealand, 3,000 tons. Melbourne, December 9.— The lock-out in the boot trade continues, and the breach between the master bootmakers and the operatives is widening. Melbourne, Dec. 10.— No fresh cases of small-pox have occurred here during the last three weeks, and the only two patients in the Hospital are now convalescent. Melbourne, Dec. 10.— On account of the Legislative Council's amendment on the Railway Bill, Government have abandoned the measure, and, adopting English precedent, a new bill has been introduced embodying the Council's amendments in order to avert a crisis. Sydney, December 5. Another case of small-pox occurred here yesterday. The Union Steamship Company of New Zealand have issued stringent instructions to all their agents for the thorough medical examination of passengers by each outward steamer from Australian ports, in order to prevent the in troduction of small-pox into New Zealand. Sydney, Dec. 10. — Additional cases of small-pox have occurred here. Sydney, December 10.— In banco today, judgment in favour of the plaintiff was delivered in the appeal case, A. G. Taylor (member for Mudgee) v. the Hon. Edmund Barton (Speaker of the Legislative Assembly). The Bench held that the Assembly had no power either to adopt from the Imperial Parliament, or to pass on its own account, any standing orders giving itself authority to punish any obstructing member, or remove him for any period longer than the sitting during which obstruction occurs.
