Small-pox in Sydney.

Tine small-pox, which first appeared in Melbourne and was conveyed thence to Sydney, has obtained a foothold in the latter city that looks like permanence. Several cases in different localities are reported, and as the summer is now advancing, a more serious outbreak of the fatal and loathsome epidemic is to be feai cd. The Victorian authorities have dealt more effectually with the plague, and stamped it out completely. With small-pox among the permanent local maladies of Sydney, we cannot long exclude it by quarantine from New Zealand, and should be prepared for its discovery in the city any day. But the small-pox hospital illegally erected by the Council on the Domain is not the fort of preparation we want. It has been condemned already by the hospital authorities, and denounced by public opinion. The Council ought to lose no time in obtaining a less objectionable location.

Barber-ons loquacity forms the thorne of many a light satire. Here is one of the latest :— Lather me lightly, and speak to me low ! Trust mo, barber, the time is near When barbers may talk from ear to enr And no ono hear ! Lather me lightly and speak to mo low ! Lather me lightly and speak to mo low ! Oh, interrogative barber mine. Your close warm breath is strong like wine— (Lather me here— Here in the other eye)— speak to me low ! There are about 5,000 milk-shops in London ; the " milk-sops " are more numorous.
