A Brahmin's mistake.

Somn shocking tragedies have occurred in the Sibsagor aistrict of India. A travelling honavic jeweller arrived late one evening at the house of a Brahmin with whom he had a slight acquaintance, and displayed his wares. The Brahmin, after making some purchase, offered to put him up for tho night. The offer was gladly accepted, and it was arranged that the jeweller should sloop on the iloor in the room occupied by tho Brahmin's son, the Brahmin a^d his wife occupying the other room While prcparirgto turn in, the honavic heard the sharpening of a dao, and fragments of a conversation boing carried oa between the Brahmin and his wife. Suspecting foul play, he induced the son to chango places with him ; and, as soon as tho former was asleep, placed a dummy composed of a bundle of clothes on the bed, crept quietly out, and ascended a tree at tho back of tho house. In about half an hour ho heard the dao doing its work, the exclamations of disappointment at finding no plunder, shortly afterwards followed by a cry of anguish at the discovery of the mistake tho murderer had made From his place of concealment the jeweller then saw tho Brahmin come under the tree with a hoe. Here he dug a grave, in which he ; buried the body of his son. At early dawn tho iewoller descended from his hiding place, and gave information at the nearest thivnna. Tho police found the body under tho tree and avrested tho Brahmin, whoso trial comes off at the next assizes. — " St. , James Gazette.''
