WAIUKU CAVALRY INSPECTION AND SPORTS.

(From the Auckland "Star," Nov. 26.) , The h*.l yt i ly inspection of the Waiuku , Troop Cuvuhy Volunteers took place on Wednesday last. There was a capital muster, 60 out of 63 being present. The arms were found to be in first-rate order. The men were kept under arms from 9.30 to 3.30 p.m., with the exception of one hour for luncheon. Not only was the inspection satisfactory, but the judging distance was also very good y indeed. On Thursday the annual tourna- . ment of this fine troop took place on the 3 recreation ground. The day was fine, and , consequently a very large gathering of 3 people took place, no less than 700 persons * being on the ground. Captain Rutherford > and 17 members of the Te Awamutu Troop 1 arrived the previous evening, and with ■ their band did much to assist in the general ' enjoyment of the day, which passed off 1 without a hitch and to the satisfaction of all. " The following are the results of the 1 contests : — | Match Revolver. — There were 37 com- ' petitors and 9 prizes — Ist, A. M. Barriball ; 2nd, Joe Barriball ; 3rd and 4th (still ties), ; King and Bright ; sth, H. Barriball ; 6th, ; A. J. Barriball; 7th, C. Priest; Bth, C. ' Sheehan ; 9th, F. Finlay. Head and King Pbactice. — There were nine prizes, but out of 27 competitors only six escaped being disqualified. Ist prize, Sergeant A. J. Barriball ; 2nd, M. Barriball ; 3rd, Joe Barriball ; 4th, W. Smith ; 5th 3 S. Rossiter; 6th, S. Barriball. Pursuing Practice. — This match brought out eight squads, and here men and horses did their work well. Match. — Squad of 4 men to parade at tbo 300 yd?. range, ride 100 yds., the two (lank men dismount, liie o shots, re-mount and till four ride round the course marked off, distance about \ mile ; 3 flights of hurdles 3ft. high, nnust be jumped by the horses with the riders on them. After they come round the two men who did not lire at the start will dismount and fire as many frhots as they can. Time, 6 minutes. For this there were S squads, and with one exception, the hoi. se» and men did their work grandly. One trooper in coming up to the finish cannoned against a young lad on horseback, and seeing the boy was about to fall, caught him, replaced him his saddle, and went to the firing point to complete his work. Ist prize Squad : Trooper Joe Barriball, G. Currie, J. Enwright and T. Adams, who scored 182 points. 2nd Squad : Lt. S. Barriball, S. Rossiter, Potter and T. Games, who scored 155 points. 3rd Squad : Sergt. A. J. Barriball, W. Hick, J. Bright, and Coleman—l44 points. 4th Squad : Lt. Bruce, Graham, Floyd, and Storey — 140 points, sth Squad : Sergt. C. T. JB.irrib.ill, YV. Flavell, C. Sheehan, <uid C Prie&t— l33 points. Hoys' Foot Hack (150yds). —Itt prize, M, Deed ; "2nd, J. McNnughten ; 3rd, A. Mitchie ; 4th, W. Flexman. Mr.x's Food Rack (SCOyds).— Ist prize, T. Floyd ; 2nd, J. Potter; did, Rumbel. Turowivo tjik Hammer, 7 entries.— l>t prize, S. Flavell, Go'ft 3in ; 2nd prize, King, 01 ft ; 3rd prize, W. Priest, 58ft Gin ; 4th prize, A J. Banibail, 58ft sin. Special Puizt- for best jumping horse in the Firing and Iluidle Match. — Major Shepherd and Sergeant- Major Manning acted as judges for this prize, and awarded it to Lieut. A. M. Barriball's charge*-. The judges were Major Shepherd, Captains Payne, Rutherford, and Dignan. The latter gentleman was, owing to City Council work, absent, but his fellow judges carried out their work most satisfactorily. At the conclusion of the sports a dinner was given by the Waiuku Troop to the Te Awamutu Troop and the judges, to which ample justice was done. During the evening Captain Hamlin proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Captains Dignan and Payne for their handsome and valuable prize. On Friday the carbine coutest between Waiuku and Te Awamutu took place, and resulted in an easy victory for Waiuku by 67 points. In the evening a dance was given to the visitors, which was well patronised, and dancing was kept ur> with vigour until the "wee hours." Our friends returned to their homes thoroughly satisfied with the treatment they had received.
