MINING NEWS.

Bvrri^Y. — T!ip following are thf» I'ptnrhs of retorted gold from the various '•rtishinsrs durini? the month ending 15tli iust. :—: —

l.h". hist n.un m! piircol was from •■ trial lor. of tlire<; trucks tiken IVoin the mullock tip.

Nrcw Find. — Although nothing o\ unusual importance has occurred during the week, the workings as a whole an* in a healthy enough stntr*, anil t.ho stuff j at present coming from different parts of the mine is quite equal to anything obtained for a length of time past. The winze going down in the Arizona level looks quite as well as it has done heretofore, the stone last taken from the bottom showing gold no luss freely than usual, and tuel'e being no siuii of any diminution in the size o.' the lode. In the low l«vel the reef going- northward continues to look well, and as driving is pushed on under the workings i xi the Arizona level a further improvement may be expected. From the present f ace to the winze just referred to the distance is about 200 feet, and the appearance of things in the Arizona workings leaves little room for doubt that the whole of this block, as well as a large stretch of the ivef to the n<>rth of the winze, will prove payable The lode in the south end of the level does not present so satisfactory an appearance. It has there a hard and uupromising look, and does not yet show any indications of improving. Very good stone has recently been got in the stopes going north over the ISio 2 level, where 'there is a large block of the reef yet to \>e worked. From the stopes over the low level both north and south of the crosscut, fair stuff has also been coming to hand. As will be seen by the battery returns the yield of gold from the mine fo»* the last month was considerably better than that for the month previous. Colonist. — There is no change of any consequence to report concerning nutters uuderground. A slight improvement is however noticeable in the low level, the payable portion of the reef having somewhat increase I in thickness. In the winze being sunk from the No. 2 to the low level the lode continues to look well. The depth is now over forty feet, li\'nt\ in the bottom there is fully four feet 'of crushing stuff, which shows gold pretty freely. The output of stone from tne stopes has for the past two or tluee weeks been rather smaller than formerly and the monthly return of gold has been thereby affected, but when this winze h earred though the level underneath it will open up a large block of the reef from which a regular supply ofpayable stone will again be obtained. Pkemieu. — The improvement that has taken place within t le last, few weeks in this once favourite mine bids fair to continue. The show in the lode now is quite as satisfactory as it was when the stuff for the recent good crushing was broken, and there is fair reason to suppose that the favourable change that has set in will be of a more testing nature than was at Hist anticipate 1. Tnere is at present about two feet of crushing stuff, which show? a plentiful sprinkling of gold, and it is not unlikely that the next crushing which will probably be commenced in ten days will give a yield equal to the last one. .Diamond Gully. — Things at this mine are now in full working or ler. The shoot and connecting tramway were completed early in the week and a commencement was at once made to forward quartz to the battery. The stuff now in course of treatment is part of that taken from the mine a length of time since.and much of the be-st stone was then separated from it, but notwithstanding this it is making a fair show on the plates, and the yield is likely to prove quite payable. In the stopes there has been no breaking down of the reef 1 lately owing to the want of convenience forgetting rid of the quartz, but a considerable extent of it has been stripped and will be taken out in the course of of the next few days. Crushing is likely to be continued for sometime. Waiorongomai. — In the low level of the workings near the Wellington bounbary the lode has improved considerably both in size and appearance during the week, and there is now a strong compact vein about two feet in width showing in the face. The quartz looks exceedingly well for gold, und resembles that got in the intermediate level, from which such excellent yields wore obtained in the bisi two crushings. It is thought some 0 w 8 feet will yet have to be driven before the run of goi I is> rftac md. Work isnow tfoing on vigorously in the Virginia^ City set-tion of ther Company's ground., Tne drive on the. reef there has been extended about l!3it, and now shows «» finr body of "stone three feet in thickness, mi which gold can be seen pretty freely. It U Oiiiefly in the honey-combed portion; l uf thti quartz- Cliufc Ue tuelol is visible.

- •-- .-- -- I^, ;-,'.- TfT'-V but strong colours" are ulho oc'easioiwlly^ observable in the" now solid parts oF the lode. Tenders have be»tn invited for a shoot and hopper to connect the working in fhis part of the claim with the County tramway, and as soot? as the er*ctkn is completed, the stuff on hand I of which there is a large quantity, will forthwith be sent to the battery.

May Qukrn. — Tub low level hns now been driven a few feet on the reef, winch is there taboiit ei# «t feet in thiujkness. Itis not Supposed that under *>xi?tin«» uonlitioiH'the whole of this is payable, but excellent prospects can be obtained in ])arcs of it, on I much of tue stone will no doubt #ive a jrood return when brought under (he stamp »is. The water has not vet, dr.tined off suffieienlly in tV upper win^e. to a.'initof sinking beini^ n^ii'iu'ii, iin I rhfi drive started justa^ove the water Icvpl is therefor 1 htill bein^ e.irrie 1 on. Very #00 1 $tul? has there been U'ofc during tlie we"k, tiie general dirt, of \v : iich there \$ -ihout two feet, beinif equal to nuvtliin^ yet found in the mine.

Invrunkss. — Work in the low level is beinic energetically pushed on. The country is of a very kin lly -le^cription, an I the reef seems t> i.uprove in appeanmce as it is -Iriven on. Th<« f^ce will lifivo to lie ctrried in some twenty fejt furt ier to reach the line of the supposed shot of #oM, and if tliu ground continues as easy to work as at present, the distance will probably be completed before the end of next week.

Phusnix.— The li>w level is closely approaching 1 tin 1 reef, which is now supposed to be not many feet distant. T:ie country has latterly become somewhat harder than it waif, and the How of water from tne fa<;e has increased very considerably, bat notwithstanding these lmwbacks ty> tl.e pt ogress of the work, the supposed line of the reef is likely to be reached before the end of next Week, i
