The most expensive paintings in the world are probably some of those forming put of the Blenheim collection. In the settlement of the Duke of Marlborough a special order was made on September Ist by the Court allowing the sale of the following paintings : — "The Madonna Anseidei," by kttphael, for £70,000, to the trustees of the National Gallery; the equestrian statue of Charles 1., by Van Dyck, for £17,700, also to the National Gallery ; and two pictures by Rubens — one of himself and his second wife, and the other of his second wife and her page — £43,500, to a person whose name was not disclosed. It is well-known that many "swells" have iallen from their high estate to the pilotage of the London Gondola. On the cabstands of the great metropolis? there are, it is said, officers enough to have led the Soudan expedition, doctors sufficient to keep half-a-dozen graveyards constantly yawning, lawyers more than it would need to set a continent at logger-heads.,
