MINING NEWS
Nkw Find. — The improvement in the nppearanee of the roof in the north en<l <»f the low love! still continues. The quartz has not yet shown any gold but if. is of a most kinlly description, and a portion of it is being saved for trial. Thore is no change in the south end of the level, the lode there still having a hard, flinty, and nnfavnurab c look. From the winze goirnj down in the Arizona lovol excellent stuff is beinqgok. Tho depth is now about 40 feet, nnd neither in sisio nor in quality does the reef show any sii^n of falling off.
C<»i,onist. — There is a slight cluin.se for the better in the low level, but the improvement is not as yet as decided ns it was expected to be at the point that has now been readied. Better prospects, however, are being got as the drive is pushed ahead, and the g^ld-bearing part of the reef is increasing in size. It is, therefore, likely that paying stone will shortly be met with. The winze in the south end of the No. 2 level is n>w down about 20 feet and the lode continaeo to look well, there being fully four feet of it that i 9 regarded as payable. In the Jupper workings operations are in progress on the reef known in the Canadian Claim as Williarns's, and fair stuff is being got as the vein is opened up in the Colonist ground. There is a good sized block of it to operate on, and it is likely to pay well for taking out.
Canadian. — Driving is going on in the upper level on a l>ranch of the main 1 vie. It has boiMi followed some disi.'iuce and lias now joiuctl with Williams's li\iiler, where there seems to be an improvement in the quality of the quanz. Oru^liinif hns for a time been stopped, but will shortly be resumed.
Diamond Guli.v. — A considerable ext?nt of the roof is now stripped and ready for breaking down, as soon as t.te now shoot and hopper arc completed, which will lv in about ten days if the weailuT continues Hm\
Waioisosoomai. — The intermediate level is being pushed ahead and fail' gold-be. iring stone continues to be got. The reef in (lie Face is about two feet in thickness, aii'l looks as promising as it hns liitfurto ilone. Stopirg is also g-otupr on from tl»e rise \n<t put though to the upper workings, and the quartz, as it \s broken ilown, shows gold piotty freely. Tim lode there varies from two to three feet in width, and the metal appears to be very evenly scattered through it. Crushing w.is commenced at the battery on VVelnesday, and the show ko tar gives promise of mother highly payable return Some 40 or 50 tons wil' be put through, ami the cleaning up will take place about the end of next week.
May Quicicn — A level h«\9 been started which will open up the reef to a • Icpth of six or seven feet below the bottom of the lower winze, and u;ive n back varying fr m 25 to 70 feet in height. As no hard country is likely to be encountered in the cross-cut, the lode will probably be reached in about a fortnight from now, nm\ from the excellent prospects obtained near the point where it will be intersected, there is good reason to believe that payable stuff will be found as soon as the reef is fairly in hand. Sinking is i^oing on in the upper winze and good stone is still coming to hand. The vein in the bottom is about two feet in thickness, and shows gold .well through it. The recent excellent return of 43 ounces from 10 tons of stuff taken from the winzes, augur., well for the richness of the claim when fairly opened up.
Lucky Hit.— The prospecting of the May Queen reef \a now being: vigorously earned on, and with satisfactory results Where it ha 9 been cut into on the surface near the boundary a good show of •jold has been qo 1 , and at another point 150 feet further into the claim, and on the samo lino of reef fair prospects have also lieen obtained. There seems no reason to douU that when the lode is opened up it will prove to be in no way inferior to the portion worked in the May Queen ground adjoining.
Phusnix. — The low level cro«s-cut is now in over l<»0 feet, stud is still going through good worKing country. The reef is expected to be met with about 50 feet abend, and if the ground gets no harder limn it. is at present, the <li>tance is likely to be accomplished in three or four wt'eKx.
Inverness. — The stuff chat has been accumulating in the hoppers at the mine • luring the lust month ha* been forwar led to the bat'ery, ami is now in- proems of ii'eatmeut. The result of the crushing will nor. be known for some days yet. Wkloouk. — The tributers in this *.anu luul a, tureo boa lot urusueU at tao
