We are glad to state that Mr Geo. Parker, who had his ankle severely sprained at the last football match, is now in a fair way of recovering. He is nble to move about with the aid of a stick, hut it will be sometime yet before he has the free use of the injured limb. A faceting of the Waiorongomai B.md of Hope was held in the school house '>n Tuesday evening, 7th imtt., Rev. Mr Me Entorii in the chair, and gave an instruc. tive address on the subject of total abstinence. The programme was a long and varied one of the usual kind on these occasions, and the attendance was large* the house being crowded on the occasion. The Rev. T. J. Wills will preach in the Wesleyan Church, Te Aroha, to morrow evening at 6. 30 Subject : " Christ made perfect through sufferings." The u«ual meeting of Te Aroha Band of Hope took place on Tuesday evening last, whon, not, withstanding the unfavourable state of the weather, there was a fui l "! attendance. Rev. T. J. Wills occupied the chair, and a good programme was gone through. " Now, then Patrick," said the merchant to his new office boy, " suppose you go for the mail." " Vis, gor ; and what kind of male wud ye be wantin' — Indian male or oat male ?" The alterations to the p.B. Patiki are in a forward state, and the vessel has been moved nearer the water's edge in order to ! make way for the railway works. The hull has been carefully caulked, and only some small matters connected with the internal fittings now remain to be attended to. Messrs Price expect to have the Patiki afloat as soon as the tides are favourable. — Advertiser. The following gentlemen's names appeared on both petitions to Warden Kenrick re leaping County tramway : — Messrs T. Lawless, W. J. Ellis, an<? W. H. Hawkins. We would direct special attention to Messrs T. & S. Moirin & Co.'s new adver tiscment. Tho excellence of the machinery produced at Messrs A. & Gr. Price's factory has received full recognition from the frequency with which large orders have been executed for firms in different parts of the colony. A seviceable high pressure steam engine, 15 hors -power (nominal), has just been completed to the order of Mr H* Brett, proprietor of the Auckland Evening Star, for ore :tion on the new premises in Shortiand and Fort-streets, and his been shipped to its destination. Tin* engine is of the marine type, with cylinder* 12-mehes in diame:er, 18 inches stroke, and the diameter of the fly-wheel being 7 feet. The fyrni has supplied various matters of ironwork for Mr Brett's new building, includingsevoral hydraulic hoists, with which a number of other establishments in the city have also been fitted during the last few in-mths. — Advertise^ In the Auckland District Court on Monday last in the case of Mariner G-.M.Co v. P. K. Donnelly, a claim for £33 17»» unpaid calls, His Worship, Mr H. G. Seth Smith, gave a decision which effects all unpaii mining calls made since September 8,1883. Shortly stated, it was, tint forfeiture of shares does not necessarily pre" elude collection of the unpaid calls connected therewith. He held that the Act provides a double remedy for the recovery of these arrears, viz , (1) to sue for the calls, or (2) to «ell the shares, and afterwards, if necessary, sue for the balance. Judgement was therefore given for the plaintiff, with costx, £4 16s. On Friday evening, 10th mat., Roy. J. A. Taylor delievered a very able and in teresting address on behalf of the W< 8 |cyan Home Mission Fund, in the Wesleyan Chapel. Rev. T. J. Wills in the ch..ir llev. Mr Mclntosh also addressed tho meeting. The weather was very unpropitioiiK, and the attendance consequently small. Mr W. J. Speight (late editor Thameß Advertiser) has been appointed manager of the Duuedin branch of the Equitabl ' Life Assurance Society of the United »tates.
