Emigration from Italy.
Some fears are entertained in Italy that the rural population will be greatly diminished by emigration to America, Africa, and various countries of Europe. The "American Register" contends, however, that this fear is groundless, as the natural increase is very large. The national increase each year is over 300,000, the emigration 169,000. In Europe, France is the great country of the Italian working-man's choice. He is close to his own land, and receives twice as much money for his labour. In Africa the French possessions are the landß to which Italian labourers and mechanics go in preference to all others. But nearly half of the whole emigration is to America,
