Battery. — The usu.il general cleaning up and monthly retorting for the principal companies took plnce on Tuesday anil the following arc t.'ic gold returns, together with tho^e from the smaller crushings, during the nio.ith :—.: — .
New Find. — There has been no marked change in thfi north end of the low level during the week, the lvpf there being still very poor Tn the winze going down in ihe Arizona level, the lode continues to look well. Fiva feet of it h l u»i 11 l? takci\, whicu is the contract width r'or sinking, and gold bearing stone is left on tie hanging wall. A new cross vein is being opeiud u;i in the upper level on the footwall of the ISTo. 2 reef. This vein has been passed in several places in the stupes, and iwis also been observed iifthe low level, but has not. yet had a fair trial anywMere. The drive that his been started on it in the upppr level will now turonghly prove it. As tar as it has been followed it has shown gold pivtty five y, ->ut it is doiulful whether it wid run any distance, as its present course will s^on bring it to Hie main or buck reef, in which it will in all probability be found to nuM'ge. Ooloniht. — In the intermediate drive from the winze good stone continues tv •.• got. There is no cnange to report o»ncerning tiie low level soutiwyurd, and
it is likely that some distunce may ye hnve to l>e (1 riven before any fmprovement is noticeable, as the run of gold in tin's direction is siill a considerable way ahead. The winze started lnst week oil Hut run in the No 2 level lial to be abandoned at a debt!' of six feet, omnn U) the inflow of water. As t!»e low Wei advances it is expeeto I to drain the ground and sinking will then be resumed. Fair stuff is coining from the upper stopes. Canadian. — Work is still going on in the surface blocks, both on the main lode and Williams's close up to the Hero buck reef. A sufficient supply of stuff is being got out for the five head of stampers engaged at the battery, and this week's crushing shows a slight improvement in the quality. Premier. — Nothing worthy of note has occured in this claim during the week. The stuff on hand — some 15 or 20 tons — will shortly be forwarded to the Imttery, and crushed as soon as an opportunity offers. The retnrn is likely to prove payable. Waioeongomai. — The reef :n the intermediate drive has improved considerably of late. It has again assumed a compact form, and has incieased in size. Gold is visible in the stone which, in appearance, much resembles that which formed the greater part of the recent payable crushing. May Queen. — Sinking is going on in the winze near the lower boundary but the reef is still much shaken. The payable portion of it is rather smaller than usual, but continues to show gold pretty freely. From the workings by the tramway some nico gold bearing stone is also occasionally got. Star. — Gold was struck in this claim a few day* ago. Mr Jas. Wilson, who h.is been engaged in prospecting the ground, succeeded on Wednesday in uncovering a small leader, from whic.i hi' has obtained some very good stuff. The vein is at present o.ily a few inches in thickness, but as both the quartz an I the country are of a very promising description, it is probable the dncoveiy will lead to something of impo-tance. Lucky Hit. — Tl »• stuff on hand from the surface block will next week be I hauled down to the tramway for conveyance to the battery. 8o far as can be seen at present the gold-bearing portion of the leader, from which it was taken, seems to be pretty well exhausted, for when the hard country is reached a short way down from the surface, the vein is almost pinched out, and no gold is dis- ! cernible in the stone. Attention will shortly be given to that part of the ground tying near the boundaries of the May Queen and Young Caledonia claims, in which direction there is good reason to believe payable lodes will be found. Inverness. — The reef has decreased very considerably in size as it has been driven on during 1 the week, and it is now from one to two feet in tuickness. The quartz, however, has rather improved in quality, and is likely to give a much better average yield when brought under the stampers than the four or five feet of stuff taken from the larger portions of the reef. Good stone continues to come to hand from the stopos. Lord Stanley. — The recent crusning from this claim has encouraged the owners to set about the further development of the ground A line has been surveyed for a branch tramway to connect with the County line at the top of the Fern Spur grade, and a wire tram will connect the branch line with the mine. A tunnel has been started to open up the reef at some depth below the part from which the trial crushings were taken, and, as soon as the works to connect the mine and battery are completed, the vigorous working of the lode will likely be proceeded with.
