MINING NEWS .

Battbry.— The amalgam returns for the week ending Saturday, the 13th inst., were as follows :

New Find. — There has been nn change of any importance during the week. The reef in the north en-1 of the level is of the usual size, but has not yet improved in quality, the quart/, having still the same unpromising i< ok that has characterised ii for the last two or three weeks. The winze in the Arizona level is down some 14 feet, and. the ld<le there continues u> look well as it is sunk on. The various stope's in this eu«l of tlie mine, and also those in the low level, present the usual satisfactory appearance. Colonist. — From the intermediate workings in the winze capital crushing stuff has been got during the past week, and the show is still very good. Another wiuze has been started in the No. 2 level on the run of gold south from the cross- ' ut, and if the water does not prove troublesome sinking will be well advanced before the low levi'l is carried in under that point. Matters in the low level are showing signs of improvement. The country is now considerably easier than it has hitherto been, and the reef is beginning to assume some of the features of the lode where found payable in the upper workings. No gold, however, \a yet visible in the stone, but some distance has still to be driven before the run is reached on which the winze in the drive above has been started. C vnadian. — The m tin or eastern portion of tne lode has now been followed to the footwall of the large reef cominir from the Hero Claim. It has not, bow ever, yet joined with that reef, but has turned off at a sharp angle, and is running parallel with it, which course it will doubtless keep until it unites with the western or Williams' vein. The appearance of the stone is very promising, and from the portion of the block that is left between the No. 1 level and the surface, some 60 feet in height, a large amount of crushing dirt will yet be obtained, from which payable returns are expected. Eureka.. — In this mine, which was recently purchased by the Battery Company and is now their exclusive property, operations are about to be resumed, and though the prospects cannot be said to be very bright it is yet hoped that something may be made of the claim. A manager has been appointed, and as soon as he has made himsel f acquainted with the state of things underground, work will be commenced. Diamond Gully. — There has hpen no breaking down of the reef during the week, but a large portion of it is now strippec and will be broken out in a day or two. Fair stone is expected as there was a good show left at the last breaking down, and from appearances it is likely that the one to follow will be quite equal to it in quality. Waiorongomai. — Work is going on in the surface drives near the Wellington boundary, and also in the intermediate level, from which places the most of the stuff in the last crushing was obtained. In the intermediate, level the lode lias for a short distance been very much split up, but it is again n.».suiiiing a compart; Form thoug.i still rather small. Arrangements have not yot been completed witn the Vermont Company for a commencement of operations at the opposite end of the clai ii. It is to be regretted that there should Uany delay in pushing on with the work there, as the prospects in that part ol the ground are such as to hold out the strongest hopes that paying quartz would he quickly met with. May Queen. — Fair gold-bearinir stone has been got during the week, botn from the winze near the lower boundary of the claim and from the tramway working... In the winze, however, tae reef has latterly been somewhat disturbed and the payable part of it has yielded less stuff than usual, but it may be expected to become more solid as sinking goes on. The depth is now about '20 feet. Inverness. — The improvement in the upper level, as reported last week, still continues, ami at each breaking down of the reef gold can be seen more or less freely. From the stopes good crushing stuff is also' being got. Star Claim. — In this property, which adjoins the Wellington and M*y Queen Claims/ prospecting is now going on. A number of nice looking leaders run oh rough the ground, and mucti of the country is of a very kindly character. The locality is a good one, and there is a fair probability that something payable will soon be dropped upon. LuNiiJ Hand. — This claim, which is now held by Mr J. M Beeche, was formerly known as the Three Brothers, and takes in a largo portion of the big reef which stands up so conspicuously in the end of the field nearest the Waiorcngomai township. On the eastern side of the reef jtuere is a large body of stone l which, on being pounded, yields a ! little gold. A small parcel, weighing 2cwt., was crushed some time ago, .and gavi a payable I return. Another trial toujs lias * been, sent to the battery f6r treatment', and if it conies' ,ap '^expectations tlw\ property U> likely to | pjroye i a\Wry_ vliluable one. >, „" ,' ',
