MINING NEWS.
Niiw Find. — Tliere is nothing of more than ordinary-importance to record concerning any of th« workings Driving and stoping are going on a 9 usual in the north end of the low level. The reef in the drive has changed somewhat in character, the quartz being of a closer texture, and bluer in colour than it has generally been before, but it still carries gold. From the stopes over this level excellent cnishiug dirt is coining out. The extension of the drive on the reef in the Arizona level has not yet been resumed, and both faces are at preseut at a standstill. To connect this part of the mine with the low level as it is extended northward a winze is about to hi started, the contract for it having already been let, and sinking will forthwith be commenced. Good stuff is still coining from the lode last opened up in the higher part of the claim, and from a strong cross vein running from it to the main reef excellent crushing dirt is also being got. Colonist. — Thereof continues gradually to improve as it is driven on southward in the low level, (he quartz broken o n during t e 1.-st few days having suuwn gold a little more freely than that untamed previously. An intermediate drive has been started midway down the winze between the No. 2and low levels, and good crushing stuff is being* got therefrom. When this block is fairly opened up it is likely to yield a large quantity of payable stone. The stopes in the upper part of the mine are producing tair crushing dirt, but the reef fc'iere i« beine rapidly worked out, and in t tree ■ r oir weeks more will probably be exhau.-teil. Premier. — The wet weather that has {prevailed for the last week or two in this'
'ugh part of the fMd", hasJiopn a grea< hindrance to siirfa.-e prospecting, an ••o'np-imtivi'lv little work of t'»al* «li" i scrij> 'ion. has recntly been lone. Attention 'uring this period has be<»n chiefly >-iven to a further trial of the No 'I. repf in tiic upper drive of the old workings. The run of payable stonp, wliieh was formprly worke I upon there, wis not. traced any distance downwarls, and it is thought that it may be picked up ne'trer to the nnin roof fchuu where first looked for. Some fair gold bearing stone has fchpre been got in the floor of the drive, and a winze Ins been started to prove whether the run may not have dipped in a different direction from that whic'i it was at first supposed to take. Canadi \n. — The vein that was opened on last week on the western side of t>a main reef in the low level, has I wen followe 1 for some distance and has much increased in size. \\, i«< now from two t,o three feet in width, and from the prospects obtained it is likely to show up better at the battery than tie stuff th-it Irts recently boon crushed from (he other workings. Stopinuf operations are yfoiny on as usual over the upper level, but without any important result. Diamond Gully. — The leading stope is bein f jf pushed ahead, and i^ now in past the winze. The reel"' is af the average s ; ze, from two to the three feet, and continues to look well. During Uie week a few pounds of picked stone have been obtained, and the general stuff is of good average, quality. Waiorongomai. — A 40-ton parcel of stuff from this mine is now in c >ime of treatment at the battery, an 1 from ap pearnnce is likely to give a payable return May Queen. — Work is being continued on the reef from which the recent crushing was taken. There is still a fair show of gold, particularly in the drive started on the tramway level, the vein having improved in quality there within the last few days. Phosnix. — The lode worked on for some time past has recently been opened up on the surface about 100 ft south from the cross-cut, and soni" nice goldbearing stone obtained. This find is* likely to add largely to the extent of payable ground in the claim, and a level will shortly be commenced which will prove the reef to a depth much below any oF the present workings. Stanley. — The recent trial crushing of five tons from this claim gave a return sufficiently good to justify a continuance of operations. The reef from which the parcel was taken is some 10 or 12ft in width, and can be cheaply worked. The quartz is also easily treated and from the proximity of the claim to the battery, the stuff can be put into the hoppers at a very small cost. There is every likelihood that this property will yet become a very valuable one.
