SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting of the IV Aroha School Comtnitt< i e (a report of which has unavoidably been «j!U?he<l out till now) was held in the school-hon<e, T.- A roh a, on Thursday cv< j nin<e, Ant,' 14th. Pivsent : Me-sis Cult' (chairiii,!iij, Ahier (sec), llott, Frazer, Adams. Brown, and L.iwlehS. Minutes of pre\ious meeting- wen* read and confirmed A letter was read from Messrs John Shea and Louis Kalm.iu, requesting that permission be gi anted tnem to hold a concert and dance in the Waiorongomai JSchool-house on Aug. 29th, to raise funds for the purpose of clearing the school-grounds, erecting swings, etc. Messrs Lawless and Brown proposed and seconded that the application be granted. Mr llott moved as an amendment that the application be gmnted for a concert only, but not for a dance, and expressed the opinion lhat under no circumstances ougut the school building be granted for dancing purposes, as of necessity the school-room and its furniture must suffer by dancing being allowed; l.kewise reminding members of Oomniitlee that they had refused the Waiorungotnai Band of Hope Committee per mission to hold a dance in conne tion wit.i their lal.i i concert. On beini^ put to the meeting there voted in favour of the amen Iment Messrs llott, Adams, and Fraaer. Auainst: Messrs Lawless, Cuff. Ahier, and Brown. The application was declared gi anted. Proposed by Mr Frazer, seconded by Mr Lawless, that the proceeds of the concert and dance be expend' d under the supervision of tue Committee. Carried. On the motion of MrFrazer, seconded by Mr Ilott, it was decided that Mr Kalman be informed any such arrangement was altogether outside the jurisdiction of the Committee. A letter was read from Rev. T. J. Wills expressing a hope that the Com mittee wo'ild hold an investigation re complaints lodged by Mr Pnrdie as o the condition tie school-ioum was left in after Sunday services, aud stating that every care had been taken by t lie Wesley an body te leave the building precisely as found. On the motion of Mr Brown, seconded by Mr Frazer, snid letter was received. A letter was read from Mr Purdie statins? that the amount received by him as fees for uso of school buildintj since last meeting amouute 1 to £,1 12s Od. A long discussion next took place relat.iv» to said fees ; the general opinion being that these I'ees weighed with undue severity on the different religious bodies, who were the most frequent users of the building. On the motion of Mr Adam*!, seconded by Mr Lawless, it was decided to rescind Mr Ahicr's resolution levying said fees. Pioposed by Mr Adams, seconded by Mr Frazer, and cairied, That ;i majority of the Waiorongomai members of the Committee i^e empowered to act on all occasions with regard to tiie letting of the Waiorongomai School-house, aud be held responsible for choir action in all matters concerning same ; and that in every case all three of the Waiorongomai mc.nl >ers be consulted. Mr Adams asked the Chairman : Had any balance-sheet been furnished to tae Committee with regard to the opening concert of the Wuioiongomai School ? 0 The Chairman replied to the effect that he did not consi let 1 it was part of the duty of the Committee to investigate this matter, and he knew nothing about it. Proposed by Mr Ahier, seconded by Mr Brown, an>l earned, Tint a committee consisting of Messrs Cuff, Frazer, and Lawless, be appointed to arrange for an entertainment (concert, etc.), for the purpose of raising funds for general school purposes, said entertainment to be held in Te Aroha on a date to l.c fixed.
