POISONING IN A ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH.
Timaru, Sept. 2. Bridget Healey, aged 35 years, and employed as domestic servant, last night entered the Catholic Church and swallowed a large quantity of ammonia. The Church was empty, but her cries attracted attention. She was taken to the Hospital, and the poison removed by the stomach pump. The woman now lies in a critical state. It is supposed she is insane.
Dunedin folks are making much of the fact that the Customs revenue collected there last month was £44,687, as against £40,874 in the same month of 1883. This increase is explained by the keenness of our Southern friends to do a little commercial gambling. An impression got abroad that the Government intended to increase the duty on sugar £d per pound, and on tea 2d. In August last year the revenue from tea was £1,950, as against £6,099 for the month just closed. From sugar the revenue was £1,853, as against £5,991. If this increase (which does not represent any improvement iv trade) is taken into account it will be found that there is really a falling off to the extent of £4,006, instead of an inincrease; and to add to the chagrin of the "canny" folk of Dunedin, there has been no addition made to the tea and sugar duties, 30 that the little " spec " will prove, a serious loss.
