SPORTING NEWS. Epsom Trotting and Racing Club. (From the Auckland " Star," Sept. 1.)

The inaugural meet of the abovo Club eventuated on Saturday last, and the weather being fine, a goodly number were present. The course is situated in a large paddock opposite the Epsom Hotel, is very undulating, and nearly three quarters of a mile in circumference. Everything in the way of appointments was of the most primitive description, even to the tent which did duty as stewards' dressing and weighingrooms combined. A totalisator was in full swing, also the usual games of chance and skill, and monopolised a fair share of attention during the somewhat weary intervals ; whilst the Onehunga Brass Band enlivened the proceedings at times with some choice music. The duties devolving on the stewards were carried out in a business-like manner, and Mr Owen Magee wielded the starter's flag with his usual dexterity. Subjoined are the results of the races : — Distance Handicap Trotting Race, for silver cup and lOsovs. Three miles. Minimum weight, lOst. A. Mathesons Maggie (400 yds.), Clarke 1 G. Robineon's Rambler (250 yds.), Wright 2 W. Pemberton's Beeswing (430 yds.), Pemberton 3 Millie, owned and ridden by J. Wattie ; also started, but was never in it ; Maggie winning very easily, without a break. Handicap Schooling Hurdle Race of 15sovs. 1£ miles. F. Gregory's Azim, lOst 71bs (Whiting) 1 LI. 11. Urwick's Claude, list 71bs (H. Taylor) 2 R. Eaton's General, lOst lOlbs (Miller)... 3 Otara, Buttercup, Satyr, Billy Spratley, \nd Mulkahy Brothers, made up a very respectable field of eight, and a good start was effected, Billy Spratley, Satyr, and Keneral being in the van, and the others ivell up, all clearing the first and second lumps in good stylo. Claude assumed the cad in the second round, with Azim at his filths, Ueneial being thh'd, and rounding ihe turn for home, Azim disposed of the eader, and came in a winner by half-a-ength. General finished well up, tho rest ion here. A protest was entered against A.zim on the ground that he was not the ior&e represented in entry Maiden Trotting Race of lOsovs. 2 miles Minimum weight, lO&fc. k. Mathesons Maggie (T. Clarke) ... 1 Buckland's General (E. Taylor) 2 Sandal's Creeping Jamie (Sandal) ... 3 Darkie, Chips, and Steamer also ran. Maggie again asserted her .superiority, and secured an easy win, General making a *ood effort, securing second honours. The winner -was protested against, on the ground that she had won an advertised race at the Thames. Novel Flat Race, of 20sovs. Minimum weight, 10»t. 1 mile. J. MinuetteDore's(Wattic) 1 I. Lindsays Dora (Sutherland) 2 F. O'Brien's Ida (Hodson) 3 Peg Woffington also started. Minuette assumed the lead at the fall of the flag, and although Sutherland, on Dora, made a gallant attempt, Wattib eventually landed bis mount a clever winner by half a length. Hack Race of lOsovs. 1 mile. Dove's Mignonette 1 Fercival's Envious 2 Dixon's Over the Hills 3 Six others also ran, and the winner held the lead throughout, Envious a good second. Still another protest was entered, this time on the ground that the "w inner was not a hack. A consolation race brought the meeting to a close, and in the evening the stewards met to decide the protests. The first was against Arzim, winner of the Hurdle Race, and the evidence being conclusive, he was disqualified and the race given to Claude. The next one was against Maggie, winner of the Maiden Trotting Race, and the cvi dence here being also very conclusive, she was disqualified, General being awarded the prize. The protest against Mignonette was disallowed, and as general had been awarded the Trotting Race, and had also appropriated the Consolation Race, the latter was given to Creeping Jamie, the second horse. The stewards referred to the number of protests entered, and expressed thanks to those investors on the totalisator who had suffered any inconvenience thereby.

Tristan, 4yrs ... 3 The form shown by Bargo and Tremando in the Derby is sure to be the means of making the pair very warm favourites for the big Victorian event. Although we wore informed on Saturday that only five paid the final acceptance, there must have been something good making the pace, for the race was run in 2 minutes 42£ seconds. The time is unusually good for the Sydney " Blue Riband," and looking over the list of previous winners, I find that only once has it been beaten — viz., by Navigator in 1882, he compassing the 1£ mile in a quarter of a second faster time. All three placed horses are engaged in the Melbourne Cup, Tremando having the verj lenient impost of GstOlbs, which must make him very dangerous in that event. Sydney, September 1. The second day's racing of the Australian Jockey Club's Spring Meeting took place at Randwick to-day. [Sir Modred, the winner of the event, is owned by the Otago sportsman, Mr D, Proudfoot, and was bred by the Christchurch Middle Park Stud Company. He is engaged in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, but by his win yesterday will incur a penalty of 14lbs for the former, and 71bs for the latter.]

Australian Notes. The Brothers Robertson have purchased the brother to Dirk Hatteraick for 2,500 guineas. An inquiry is being held into the scratching of Sir Modred for the Hawkesbury Handicap. Hastings is heavily backed to win the Metropolitan, Caulfield, and Melbourne Cups. With the exception of Bargo, who has shortened to fives for the Victorian Derby, and Tremando to sevens, there is no change in the betting market. Garfield is an absentee from the Wagga Cup.

South Canterbury Jockey Club. Timaru, this day. The annual business meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club was held last night. The balance-sheet showed a present deficit of £12S, which will be reduced to some extent by a receipt for rentals next month. The total expenditure for the year was £1,849. It was decided to hold a Spring Meeting on 25, giving £270 of added money.
