EFFECTS OF TOBACCO ON THE YOUNG.
Tub effect of Tobacco on youth has been reported upon by Dr. G. de Caisne to the Society of Public Medicine. Thirty-eight youths, from nine to fifteen years, all of whom used tobacco, were placed under his c.ire for observation. Twenty-five of them showed distinct disturbance of the action of the heart, deficiency of digestion, sluggishness of intellect, and craving for alcoholic drinks. In thirteen there was intermittent pulse ; m eight tue red blood corpuscle? were ivduced in number twelve had frequent nose-blee ling ; ten suffered constantly fumi nightmares ; four had ulcerated mouths, and one devebped consumption from deterioration of blood, caused l«y the long-con-tinued use of tobacco The better fed children suffered least. Eleven had smoked for six nionti.s, eight for one year, and sixteen for over two years. Eleven of them were induced- to give up tobacco, six were restored to health in six months, aud the others at the end of a year, but after iiimc i suffering and the loss of time anil impared growth.
