Bull Fights in France.

The announcement that bull fights are no longer to be permitted at Nimes and other towns in the south of Prance appears to have greatly irritated the inhabitants of these localities— or, perhaps, it would be more exact to say a portion of them; and a meeting has been held at Nimes to protest against the cominginterdiction. Bullfights, contend these lovers of a cruel sport, are a recreation much to the taste of the southern population 5 they form a diversion highly appreciated, and such spectaclesare popular. It may be so. There are, perhaps, people in the south who enjoy seeing animals tortured, just as thoro are people in Paris who derive pleasure from witnessing a public execution on the Place de la Roquette; but after the sickening sight at the last bull fight at Nimes, it will occur to most men that such a barbarous kind of amusement ought to be put down. The bulls were subjected to a slow martyrdom j they were killed by inches and atrociously tortured by men who were not even tolerably proficient in their calling. It was, in fact, a simple butchery, a sanguinary spectacle of the most revolting description . It is a poor argument in f avour of such sights that they "suit the popular taste;" and it is to be hoped that the French Minister of the Interior will adhere to his i determination of prohibiting bull fights in any part of France for the future. — " Stand-
