ALARMING RAILWAY ACCIDENT. Baker's Van Run into by a Train. Auckland, August 19.

This forenoon an alarming collision between a railway train and a baker's van occurred at the level crossing at Railwaystreet, Parnell. A train leaving Auckland for Onehunga had got a fair rate of speed on when, after crossing the bridge at the foot of Parnell Rise, the accident occurred. A horse and van belonging to Mr Martin, baker, Parnell, had been left standing near the line while the man in charge had gone into an adjacent house to deliver bread. At sight of the approaching train the horso took fright, and, just as the engine drew near, the animal bolted and tried to cross the line in front of the train. The result was a collision between "the iron horse " and the one of flesh and blood, which fully bore out the quaint remark of George Stephenson as to the probable effects of a collision between his locomotive and a " coo." The baker's horse sustained soirous injuries, the van was smashed, and the loaves scattered, while the engine did not as much as go off the line. After about two minutes' detention, the train proceeded on its way, the wreck of the baker's cart being gathered up. Mr Hanson, stationmaster at Auckland, having been apprised of the occurrence, went at once to the spot and ascertained all particulars. We are informed the occurrence was purely acci dental.
