ROWING CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD. THE CANADIAN WONDER DEFEATED BY BEACH.
Sydney, Saturday. The rowing match for tho championship of tho world and a stako of £1,000, botvveon Edward llanlan, of Toronto (Canada), and William Beach, of Sydney, took placo this afternoon over the champion couroo on tho Parramatta River, and resulted as follows : William Beach, Dapto 1 Edward Hanlan, Toronto ... 2 Tho woathor was magnificent, but tho water was slightly rough. A splondid start was ellcctcd, and a dead lovol vas maintained for tho iirst quarter milo. llanlan thon forged ahead, and when a milo and a-half had been covered tho Canadian was about a longth in advance Boach, howovor, responded, and rowed right down on Hanlan. Tho latter allowed his boat to cross, and a foul took placo. Hanlan put up his hand, and claimed "a foul." Beach, however, kept pulling away. Hanlan followed, but Beach came to tno post an easy winner by iivo or six lengths. Time, 20m. 295. Tho umpire disallowed tho foul claimed by Hanlan.
