PROPOSED CHEESE FACTORY FOR CAMBRIDGE.
Cambridge, August 4. A meeting of settlers was held on Saturday to consider the starting of a cheese factory, and was well attended. Capta ; n Runciman, of the Waikato factory, was present, and afforded some valuable information respecting the Waikato factory. He stated that though there was a deficit on the year's operations, £18,000 had been taken from the ground and transferred to the pockets of the farmers without deteriorating the land. Had they paid 3£d per quart, as other factories paid, instead of 4d, they would have been able to declare a dividend of 10 per cent. His cows had made £8 per head during the season, and he expected them to make £10 next year. The farmers made 100 per cent, more out of their grass in this way than by any other way. All milk suppliers would be satisfied to supply in future for 3^d. After some further discussion, it was agreed to start a factory, and a Committee was appointed to arrange the preliminaries and report at a meeting next Saturday.
