A CASE LANDED FROM THE WAIHORA.
(From the Auckland Star," August 4.) Great excitement prevailed in town to-day owing to the circulation of a rumour that Btnall-pox had broken out on board of the Union Company's steamer Waihora, which is expected to arrive hero at any moment* The facts are these. The Waihora was yesterday at Napier, having arrived there from her usual trip from Melbourne, via Southern ports, and this morning the Mayor of Auckland (Mr Waddel) received a telegram from there stating that a case of small pox had ocourred on the vessel, that the patient had been sent on shore, and that the steamer would continue her voyage to Auckland. The telegram was sent to the Harbour Board by the Town Clerk, and in consequence after Dr. Philson, Health Officer, had been consulted, instructions were given to the Harbour - master that the Waihora, on arrival here, must be prevented from coming up the harbour until examined. There is some doubt yet as to whether the law will enable the Health Officer to quarantine the vessel, seeing that she has been cleared at Napier. The following telegram has been received by the Press Association ;—; — Napier, August 4. A cf]jpe of confluent smallpox was landed fromthfe steamer Waihora on Saturday, and was spnt to the Hospital. The natux-e of the disease was suspected yesterday, and was caaArmed to-day. The man was not expected to live. He had not been vaccinated. The Mayor wired to the Colonial Secretary for instructions, and also to the Mayors of Auckland and Gisborne to warn them of the Waihora. Arrangements have been made to quarantine the hospital and to remove the case to the quarantine station.
