AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS MOBBED. Disgraceful Scene on the Oval Ground. London, August 1.
In the cricket match between the Players and the Australians, at the luncheon hour the colonials only required eleven runs to win the match. The crowd demanded that the game should be immediately finished, because they suspected that thematch would be prolonged for the sake of the gate money. On knowing this, Murdoch allowed the free admission of the public after 2 o'clock. The mob then rushed the ground, drew the stumps, pulled up stakes, and jostled and hooted the colonials. After a delay of about three quarters of an hour, the police succeeded in clearing the ground. The game was then proceeded with and won in a few minutes.
