'T.us ahoy.* all —to thino o«v i-s-^f tn true And it must follow sis tho night Iho day, Thou canst not then bo false to any m«n.' — Shakespeare.
SATURDAY, AUGUST 252 5 1831.
We hive this week received a letter from Mr J. B. Whyte, cur respected parliamentary representative, by which we regret to find that Mr Whyte's state of health is such that much as ho would wish to pay this district a *isit, he fears it is quite out of the question his being able to do so prior to the assembling of the House. HLe also sends a letter for publication to this effect, which will be found in another column. Weregretexceedingly Mr \V byte's inability to come amongst us personally just now, a visit from our member would have been much appreciated, and several matters of importance to the district have been brought under his notice. Still none of us would wish him to Jeopardise his health by undu*i exertion in his present state. It is very satisfactory to know Mr Whyte fully expects to be able to proceed to Wellington in good time for his parlia- | mentary duties, by being careful in the i meantime. We hope to soon hear of bis complete restoration to health and strength. At the Police Court, on Thursday last, [ before C. S. Stafford, Esq., J.P., Win. i Curnow, was charged, on the information jof Sergeant Emerson, with drunkenness and disorderly conduct in Rewi Street. Prisoner pleaded not guilty. He was ! sentenced to one month's, imprisonment i ijlhe Thames Goal, with hard labour. An advertisement appears in another column convening a mating to lu> held next Saturday in the Public Hall, for the purpose of considering railway and other matters. All who take tin iutoie.>t in the welfare of the district should attend. No lest, that cloven tenders were revived a few days ago for the driving of .1 crosscut in one of the Thames mine*, from which it would appear that a con-.idcr.ible number of unwmployed mineia aro to be found in the distiict.
