ATTEMPTED ESCAPE OF A GANG OF DESPERATE PRISONERS.
Plymouth (Eng.), Juno 30.— While a gang of twenty-five convicts wore at work hero one of their number threw a laigo stone at the solitary warden, which struck him on the head, indicting a stunning blow. The ontire gang thon rushed for him. A lifo convict named Stevens outstripped the others, seized the warden's riflo and ammunition and fired upon the advancing convicts, six of whom ho seriously wounded. When his ammunition was exhausted Stevens clubbed five others with the rifle, and when assistance arrived was completely exhausted. Tho details of the affair were promptly reported to tho Government, and t)ho Home Secretary gave orders that Stevens bo immediately released from prison and rewarded. When the good news was mado known to Stevens he fainted.
