Melbourne, July 24. — In the Legislative Assembly, last night, Mr Berry stated that the doctor at the sanatorium had pronounced tho disputed cases of disease to be undoubted small-pox. Mr Berry added that the Government proposed to replaco Dr. Youll at an early date. Jewel has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. Melbourne, July 25.— The Melbonrne manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Co , New Zealand, reports a sale of cargo of kauri timber at the following average prices at per 100 feet super :— Sawn flitches, 15s 3d ; sawn boards, 1-inch, 14s 5d to 20s {sic) ; ditto, 1£ to 3-inch, 14s 6d ; dressed boards, g-incb, 16s ; ditto, f-inch, 16s 6d at per 100 feet lineal ; T. and G. flooring, 4 x I£, 7s 6d. Market dull. Melbourne, July 26.— 1 tia announced that the Government intend shortly to issue
an order-in-council in connection with the outbreak of smallpox in this city. Melbourne, July 20.— Edmund Marshall, tho woll-known comedian, was run over by a vehicle in the streot to-day, and died from injuries received. Melbourne, July 28.— Altogether about a dozon cases of small -pox are now in existence here. Melbourne, July 29.— A disastrous fire took place last night at Hitchon and Son's ?toro at Sandridgo, rosulting in tho destruction of tho building and its contents, which consisted chiefly of cotton. Ihe damage is estimated at £3 000. Melbourne, July 29.— Tho Melbourne manager of the National Mortgage Agency Company, Now Zealand (Limited), reports of the local grain market as follows :—: — Wheat, 4s to 4s 1 id ; market firmer. Malting barley, neglected at Da 9d to 4s Cd. Now Zcftlund oats : Feeding sorts, 2s lOd to 3s Id': prices barely maintained. Milling sorts, 3s 2d to 3s 3d ; market weaker. New Zealand oats, undor bond, 2s 2d to 2s sd. The National Mortgago and. Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited) report a full cargo of kauri timber at tho following average prices at por 100 feet super :— Hewn logs, "13s to 14s 6d. Firm and active demand experienced. Sawn flitches in fair demand, at 15s to 16s. TG flooring : Tho market is quiet, and in favour of buyers. Sydney, July 24.— Tho Land Bill passed through Committee in tho Legislative Assembly last night, and tho third reading has been fixed for Tuesday next. Sydney, July 26.— A case of small-pox, but one of a mild type, is reported from Forbes Town, 240 miles west of this city. Tho local authorities have taken every procaution to prevent the spread ef the disease. Sydxet, July 28.— It has been ascertained that the patient at Forbes is suffering from measles, not small-pox, as supposed. The quarantine which had been established lias consequently been lemoved. Sydney, July 29.— News has been received hero that the steamship Taiwhau, which left Hongkong on July 4th for Sydney, grounded on a reef on the Australian coast. Tho efforts which havo been made to float the vessel have as yet proved unsuccessful. Hobvtit, July 24.— The manager of tho branch bank of Tasmania at Beaconsfield, a town 33 miles north-west of LauncevSton, was stuck up last night, and the keys of the bank taken from him. Subsequently tho bank was entered, and cash to the amount of £2,500 abstracted. The police are now in pursuit of the robbers. Houaut, July 26. — Further details are to hand regarding the bank robbery at Beaconsficld. The acting - manager (not the manager) Stockhouse was tied to a tree, with his head envelepcd in a pillow-case, and two men entered the bank, while two others who were armed guarded Mr Stockhouse for two hours. He was then released. The watch and money which he had on him were not taken. Tho cash in hand at the time of the robbery was unusually large, owing to its being pay-day at the mines. Hobart, July 28.— Four arrests _ have been made of persons believed to be implicated in the bank robbery at Beaconsfielcl. None of tho money, however, has been recovered. Brisbane, July 23. — A bill providing for payment of members of Parliament was introduced in the Legislative Assembly today.
