RESULT OF THE POLLING.

Tho result of the poll al Dovonport was made known at G. 50 p.m. It fell decidedly Hat, only about a dozen persons being present, and the general interest taken in the election appeared to bo slight, so surely was Mr .Hurst considered safe to bo elected. Opinions havo been expressed that the Waitemata election would have to be declared invalid owing to a hiatus a\ Inch occurred at Kuinou. It appears that tho official notification was not received by the Returning Ollicer thore until after tho hourat which the poll should have opened. He however proceeded with the polling, but Mr Farnall having entered a protest against any votes being recorded, ho closocl the poll and left. It is claimed, we believe, by Mr Far nail that the election is invalid on account of this lapso, and it is stated that strenuous efforts will be made by the Opposition party to have it declared void, with the view to bringing out a strong defeated candidate to fight Mr Hurst. To-day, however, therumour was to the effect that Mr De Lautour or Mr Sheehan would be the candidate selected, in tho event of the seat being declared vacant. It does not appear, however, that there is any likelihood of a fresh contest, as by Clause 74 of the Regulation of Elections Act, the Governor has powor to validate I any election which might be irregularly conducted, In this case, the polling at itumeu cannot possibly affect the result, as the number of electors in the district does not reach 100, while Mr Hurst's majority over his opponent is about 400. Acting on legal advico, Mr Seaman, the principal returning officer, has declared the result of the polling in the eleotorate, and intends we believe, to communicate with the Government on the subject.
