PETTY LARCENIES. Auckland, July 9.
Numerous pettty larcenies of an aggravating character are reported from the suburbs. Several cases are reported of men prowling about in the vicinity of lonely tenements at unholy hours of the night, to the extreme alarm of femaleresidents. Two or three ladies in Ponsonby are reported to have left the family washing out during the night, only to discover in the morning that every gar-
raont had mysteriously disappeared. Other acts of petty pilfering havo been reported to us, whilo a robbery of a still raoro serious natuvo was perpetrated yestorday. During tlie progress of tho sale at Mr Knight's house in Newton, a valuable gold watch was stolon from the pocket of a lady who was standing amongst the crowd with the objoct of bidding. So skilfully was it removed that tho wearer had no knowledge of her loss until it was too late to traco the thief. The matter has been placed in tho hands of the police, and it is to bo hoped that more will soon be heard of it. There aro reasons to believe that these larcenies aro cairied out by a well-organised gang.
