MURDER OUS ASS AU LT. Wellington, this day.

Early on Sunday morning, a murderous assault mas made on a man named Maher. It appears that Maher and a man named Franklin were drinking together on Saturday night, and the latter accompanied Franklin to his home, where they drank a bottle of brandy. A quarrel afterwards took place, when it is supposed that Franklin split Mahers head open with an axe, as he was found lying in Franklin's house with a fearful gash on his left temple about five inches long. Maher was taken into the hospital, but faint hopes are given of his recovery. Franklin was arrested yesterday, and will be brought up this morning.
