SPORTING NEWS. Canterbury Jockey Club. Christchurch, June 30.
A GLXi-UVL meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club was hold at Warner's Hotel on Fiiday afternoon. Mr G, <l. Stead explained that the piincipal business of the meeting was to con-idci the piogiamme of the pea-son as proposed by the Committee. The Spiing Meeting had £1,000 added to it, and the Kew Year's Meeting remained the same. The Autumn Meeting had £300 added to it, on the motion of Mr Thomas, seconded by Mr Grillith. Mr 110-s suggested the establishment of an Oaks Stakes. The .suggestion gave rise to a discus-ion, dm ing ■which the Cliaii man remarked that the question of the Oaks Stakes had been discu.s'sed, and the Committee were generally or opinion that the time had not yet arrived for the intioduefion of .such a stake. llowc\er, there would be no luum done in the mutter being brought before the Committee. On the motion of J\Jr Gii/lith, it was aL, r iuedto ask the Committee to consider w hether it w ould not be advantageous to impose a penalty or 2>enaltie& in futmo in the Champagne Stakes.
