MINING NEWS.

The returns from the crushing for the F Claim is not yiven, but it is supposed the yield was large enough to bring tiie total for the month up to about lOOOozs. The battery is now in full work, 20 head going on New Find stuff, 10 for the Colonist, and 10 for the Eureka. New Find. — Underground matters are in the usual satisfactory state. Driving is going on both ways in the low level, and in both faces the reel' looks well, especially in the north end, where some excellent stone has been got during the week. In the Arizona level also, the two faces are now fully manned, a contract having recently been let for f an extension of the drive on the reef southward. The show in the north end i is still very good, the lode there being of [large size an'd yielding quartz of full average quality. From the stopes over this level, and likewise fiom those on f the No. 2 reef, an abundant supply of crushing stuff is obtained for all the stampers that are at present available at the battery. Colonist. — The reef struck hi the low level early last week has been [ crossed, and the drive is being pushed I forward in good country. The company's surveyor, Mr Bayldon, made a j survey of the ground last week, and is of opinion that the lode now being worked in the level above is still some little distance ahead. Should this prove to be the case, and if found in the position indicated by the underlie in the upper workings, the main lode will probably be reached early next week. Stoping is going on as' u'-iual,- hub there is nothing of more than ordinary interest to" record. Sinking has been resu rated in' the winze in the intermediate level,' an'd the reef looks well in going down 1 . Diamond Gully.— There' is still a good show in the winze, a fair sprinkling ofgold behigviaible in the stone last broken down. Tbe reef has slightly increased in size,- but the country is still of the usual tight description. Fortunately there is comparatively little water, and tiis circumstance is a great help to tire fuxteatfee' of the woVlc of sinking.'

Eureka. — Since crushing was commenced the working staff in the mine has been increased, anrl un lerground ope"ratfons are now vigorously pus ie<l on. Driving is h^ing- proceeded with in the i uterine iiate level, nnd stoping is also going on both norfh and sonth, of the winze. The stuff at present being got from these workings is of godd average quality. In the low level leading scopes have been started in both directions, and the reef is there of a very promising | appearance. The extension of the level I t,6 the Victorian boundary will presently Ibe resinned. A few slight alterations have recently been made on the wire tramway, which now works excellently, and it is anticipated that about three days' run will convey stuff enough for p full week's eiushing^ WELLiNGTON.—fIie stuff got from the mine has been forwarded to the battery, and will probably be crushed early next week. Waiorongomai. — The rise which was started from the low level lias been abandoned for the time being, on account of the wetness of the ground* since the lasfc rainfall. A winze to meet it lias been commenced in the intermediate • Irive, artd is so far quite dry. If the water ddes not prove again troublesome the connection will probably be accomplished in a fortnight. As soon as communication is effected between the low level aiid the upper workings the stuff obtained from the surface and intermediate drives will be sent to the battery for treatment. Inverness. — The extension of the drive on the reef southward has been comnienoed. The country is at present much broken, and the reef slightly disturbed, but the quartz is still of good quality. Stoping is also going on, and j with satisfactory results. The hopper is i being rapidly filled, and there will snortly be stuff enough On haiid for a good crushing. Vermont. — The winze that was started for the purpose of proving the leader uiidet the low level had to be given njJ at a depth of 14 feet, owing to the inflow of filter after the rain of last week, though the vein was small, there was ft fair show of gold to the bottom 1 . A riSe Ims now been commence 1, and as soon as it is up a sufficient distance, a start will be made to block out the leader above the level. Canadian.— -The face of the Colonist intermediate level has been taken up and the drive extended some 15 feet into the Caiuidian ground. The reef is from 3 to 4 feet in width, and from the appearance of the stuff it ought to show up well at the battery. There is now a considerable quantity on hand, and crushing will shortly be commenced again. Phcbnix. — Stoping is now going on, and stuff is being got out for another crushing. The lode is now over a foot in thickness, and gold more or less is seen every breaking down. Lucky. Hit. — Operations, which have for a length of time been at a standstill in this claim, are about to be resumed under the management of Mr Win. Goldsworthy, whose long experience in mining and ability as a manager are well known. There is reason to hope that under his charge this once favourite mine will quickly be brought into repute again.
