Thames, Last Night. Information has been received to the effect that an elderly man named Jobri Wilson was drowned at Paeroa last night while endeavouring to get aboard of the steamer Aroha. The body was found a few minutes after the accident occurred; but life was extinct. Deceased was formerly a publican at the Thames.
Wellington, Last Night. Government have decided not to interfere with the death sentenco passed on Edwards, the Ormondville murderer. Parliament was dissovled by proclamation at noon to-day. All writs were issued at 12.45, fixing election for 2TZS ' July. Writs are made returnable by 6th August, and Parliament meets' for the despatch of business on 7th 'lugust. Sir Geo. (4rey declined a requisition from Christohurch Nmth. Adam Porter and A. K. Taylor likely to to come out against Tole for Eden. Hamlin announces that if elected for Franklin Morth he will support Atkinson Ministry. Benjamin Tonics, auctioneer, died this morning,' aged 52. Wathen, who addressed a large meeting at Mojgiel (Otago), latt night, announced himself strong Oppositionist and follower of Sir Julius Vogel.
Dunedin, Last Night. In the Star contempt case, Mr Stout appearing for plaintiffs, and Mr Hagget for the paper, the latter put in answering an affidavit stating that the declarations' and defence were published without comment solely us news, and therefore could not prejudice any person reading them i that if the publication is contempt the p.iper had no knowledge thereof, arid disclaims such intention. Justice Wiliiads reserved judgment.
