PARLIAMENTARY. [By Electric Telegraph.] (Per Press Association.) LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Wellington, Last Night.
In the legislative Council all business was postponed on account of political crisis. Mi* Lean resumed debate on the Address in Reply, and advocated new Native policy, which, if adopted as in 1877, would put the North Island in a far better position. He ridiculed the threatened dangers of federation, and said the risk from convicts must be seriously considered. Hoped party jealousy would be put aside in selecting a route for Miin Trunk Line in North Island as would benefit the whole Colony Mr VVaterhouse considered the depression was not of a merely temporary nature. He thought for the present it would not bo proßtiihe to make Northern Trunk Railway, seeing' that neaily all lands were in native hands. lie strongly opposed perpetual leasing, and he hoped to see federation realised. Mr Reynolds attributed the depression largely to needless and extravagant expensive public works. Dr Grace supported admi ii trative service of Minister of Lands, and supported perpetual leasing. The debate was adjourned until Tuesday.
