MINING NEWS.
Battery. — The returns of amalgam for last week's crushing were as follows :
The stampers are now in full work, 15 head going on New Find stuff, 10 on Colonist, 10 on Eureka, and 5 on a crushing from the F Claim. It is not likely that there will be any further stoppages either for want of water or of quartz. The races are full, and the three principal cl Minis now crushing, via. : the New Find, Colonist, and Eureka could easily supply a much larger quantity than the battery can put through. The Eureka crushing is showing up most satisfactorily, tmd the amalgam already taken from the plates leaves no doubt that, the stuff is highly payable.
New Find. — Since gold was struck, and the reef crossed in the low level last week, no time has been lost by the manager in completing preparations for a continuance of operations there. A contract has been let for driving on the lode, pnd as soon as the rails are laid from the mouth of the level to the shoot so that the quartz may be sent direct t > the hopper, work underground will be resumed. 'JUhe sinking of the No. 2 winze is going on apice. The depth now attained is about 75 feet, and by the end of next week it is likely to be as far down as required. Good stone is obtained at each breaking down of the reef, anil it may be regarded as a certainty that it will continue to the level below. Communication has now been effected between the upper winze and the rise from the Arizona level. The workings in that portion of the mine being now thoroughly ventilated, operations, which have for two or three weeks past been there somewhat retarded, will again be vigorously pushed on. Concerning the upper blocks the news is of the usual satisfactory character
Colonist. — Three shifts are now engaged in the low level, which it is expected will intersect the reef in about ten days, provided no worse country is met with than that now in hand. From the upper workings there is nothing to record of more than ordinary importance.
Canadian. — The erection of the Jiopper is now being rapidly proceeded with, and in a few days it will be ready for receiving quartz. As soon as it is completed underground operations (which are at present confined to the sinking of the winze) will be proceeded with on an extended scale, and a regular supply of stuff procured for the battery. Tenders have already been called for extending the low level 100 feet.
Diamond Gully — Good stone is still being 1 got in the winze, but the country is of the usual tight description. Fortunately the water does not increase in going down, and therefore on that score there is not likely to be any difficulty encountered in sinking. The manager has received instructions to select a suitable place for a low level, and from tnis circumstance it may be conjectured that the systematic working of the ground has now been determined upon. It is to be hoped that the new drive will be started without delay, for it will afford the only means of carrying on operations to advantage, and when thus opened up itmay fairly be expected, from the excellent prospects already obtained, that the mine will soon afterwards take a prominent position among the payable ones on the field. Since the foregoing was written ttyfe manager has received further instructions to have a survey made for the projected low level, and immediately thereafter to call for tenders for driving 100 feet.
Inverness. — S toping is going on over the upper level on the reef in the lower part of the claim, and stone of fair quality is being obtained. A considerable quantity is now in the hopper, and as soon as a supply sufficient to form a fair crushing has been got out it will be forwarded to the battery for treatment.
Vermont. — The sinking of tlio winze in the level below the 'ipper workings of Inverness Company has been resumed, and payable quartz is still being got from the small leader on which the winze is going down. This is the same vein from which the recent excellent crushing for the Inverness Company was taken, and there can hardly be any doubt that when fairly opened up in the Vermont claim it will pay well. It is at present intended to trace the gold as far down as possible, and should the same encouraging show continue a low level will be started. r
Waiorongomai. — Driving on the line of the reef in the low level is going on. The lode is still much split up, but a good well-defined footwall has now come in and it is likely the different veins.will shortly coma together. The face of the drive is still some 15 feet distant from the line of t.ie supposed run- of goli I met .with in tho level above.
-Wellington. — Driving has for the •present been suspended, and the goldbearing portion of the* vein extending 'S,ose/iO oi';so feej inwards from ttvh v
mouth of the level is now being- stoped out. Some excel lent stone has recontly I'een got, ami there* will shortly be on han'l a considerable quantity of payable stuff reailv for the battery.
Euueka.. — A commencement was made in the curly part of the week to send down quartz from the mine by means of the wire tramway. Crushing was started some days ago, and it is satisfactory to lvport that the expectations forrnel regarding the payable quality of the stuff are likely to be 'fully realised, the quantity of amalgam taken off th/ 8 plates from the lot already pat through giviug promise of an excellent general yield. Everything in the mine is in full working order, and with the quantity of stone on hand ready for transmission to the battery, there will be no lack of material to keep 10 head of stampers going for a considerable time to come.
Phcbnix. — The opening up of the re< j f above the level where the stuff was obtained for the recent crushing is being proceeded with. A rise has been commenced, and is now up soma 7 or 8 feet. Most of the quartz broken down has shown a good sprinkling of gold, and judging from present nppea ranees it is likeiy to continue. The gold obtained from the crushing realised the excellent price of L 3 7s 8d per ounce.
F Claim. — Another parcel of sfcuff from this claim is now in process of treatment at the battery, and is showing up for a good return. The quantity put through so far seems to be quite equal to the last crushing, the yield from which was more than payable.
