The following is a description of the match played at Sydney on Saturday, March 31st :— The Sydney players in the first match between tho New Zealand and New South Wales teams were : Walker, Vaughan, Y. Bayliss, Wood, Belcher, Neill, Deanc, Bayliss, Tange (2), Clement, Walters, Ford, Pell, and Cameron. The spectators numbered botween 4,000 and 5,000. New j Zealand played one less half - back and one more iorward than their opponents. Bayliss (H. M.) captained the Sydney team, whose colours were all green. Milton, who won the toss, elected to defend the northern goal, which gave tnem the advantage of the sun at their backs. Sydney was forced down twice in tho first ton minutes, and before tho halfhour had expired twice "more were they compelled to touch down in self-defenco, and only twice had tho ball been New Zealand territory. Warbrick drew first blood, when, after getting the ball passed to him, ho with a left-foot kick ! sent it flying over their opponents' goal. After the kick oil Braddon got the ball, and carried it close to Sydney's touch, when he lost it, and Sydney again forced clown. Taiaroa, who had been distinguishing himself greatly had similar bad luck. Ryan made an atj tempt at goal, but just miesed, and again Sydney was forced down, and immediately after Ryan made another unsuccessful pot. Taiaroa secured a try immecliarely after haif time, which Milton conveitecl icto a goal. Sydney now played bettor, and succeeded in forcing New Zealand down, but a few minutes later New Zealand returned the compliment. Shortly after Robertson got a try at adifHcult angle, and Ryan failed in the kick at goal, and Sydney again forced down. New Zealand again forced down, and after an ineffectual pot at goal by Belcher the game concluded, New Zealand winning by 11 points to nil.
