MI NINGS NEWS.
The tailings from the Phoenix crushing are now m process of treatment, and will add perhaps two ounces more to the yield. In addition to the above parcels, a trial lot from the Moa claim was also put through. We are not in possesion of the exact yield, but understand that it was not considered satisfactory.
New Fivd. — The most important item of news from this miubis the sinking of gold in the low level. Although, from the fact of payable quarta having been obtainei all the way down in tue
No. 2 winze, the finding of similar stone in _the level was regarded as tolerably certain, it is still satisfactory to have the actual assurance that the anticipations formed regarding this portion of the mine have been fully realised, and to know that any lingering doubts that may hare existed as* to the permanently payable nature of the reef, may now be set at rest. The quartz got in the level is of similar appearance to that in the winze, whica n now within some 9 or 10 feet of being tii rough. The stone met with in sinking during tho week lias been of excellent quality, and some of that from the breaking down on Tuesday was quite equal to anything yet found in the mine. The connection of the winze with the level will open up a very large block of the reef, and from the prospects obtained all through it, may be safely calculated that there will be no lack of good crushing dirt for the battery for the next twelve months at least. The workings in the Arizona level, as well as those above, continue to yield considerable quantities of stone, and the battery returns for the last week show that there is no falling off in the quality. Connection between the upper ami Arizona workings will now be quickly accomplished, as the holing through from the winze to the rise is expected to take place in a day or two.
Colonist.— The low level is again being pushed on. Work was resumed with three shifts some days ago and it is expected that the reef will he lvached in about a fortnight. There has recmtly been a slight change for the better in the country. Stoping operations are being vigourously carried on in the upper workings, which are yielding a steady supply of stuff for the 10 head of stampers now kept going at the battery.
Canadian.— The winze is now down 20 feet, ami the reef continues to show I gold in paying quantity. Operations are at present limited to sinking until the erection of the hopper ; there being no means of storing the quartz without incurring unnecessary labour and expense.
Diamond Gully.—- Sinking 1 is still going on in the winae anil the show of gold continues satisfactory. The recent excellent yield of 43055 Sdwfcs retorted yrok\ from 10 tons of quartz and a small quantity of picked stuff, gives proof of the payable nature of the reef ; and with such encouraging prospects it may be expected the working of the claim will now be energetically carried on.
Invekness. — 'Since the connecting of the winze and rise last week the ground lias been pr.iperly timbered and secured, and a commencement made to open out on the reef, from which some very fair stone has already been obtained. AAs everything may now be said to be in proper trim for working there will doubtless be a regular series of crushings from the claim. The small parcel of selected stuff (about 2^ tons) from the leader, near the upper boundary, was treated at the battery during the week, and gave the fine return of 450z 19d\vts retorted gold. Two or three ounces more are expected from the tailings, &c.
Eureka. — The extension of the County tramway to the lower hopper is now finished, and a commencement will likely be made to forward stuff from, the mine on Monday. There is a large quantity on hand, and the 10 heads of stampers at the battery, to which the company have a right, will be kept going for some time to come. Waiorongomai. — The reef has been cut in the low level and followed for a few feet, but it is at present somewhat broken. Much of the quartz is of k very promising character, but so far no gold has been scon in it. F Glaim.— Although much unnecessary reticence is displayed with regard to the yield of gold from this claim, the fact of operations being resumed and preparations being'made for a lengthened period of work with the wire tramway, prove that the return from the recent crushing must have been satisfactory The engine for hauling up the stuff from the mine to the County tramway is now undergoing repairs, and by the time these are completed another parcel of stuff will U> in readiness for thu battery.
Welcome. — The working of this mine has been let on tribute to Mi- R. Burke, an old and experienced miner. In his hands it will receive a thorough trial, and is likely soon to be heard of again as a gold producer.
