In Congress, on May 6, by a vote of 159 to 155, the enacting clause of the Morrison Tariff Bill was struck out, and revenue reform killed for this session. The debate was the most exciting for many years. Grant, senior membor of firm, and ex Governor Stanford, of California, propose to endow with several millions a University for the sons of working men. The Greely Arctio relief expedition sailed on May 10. One of the vessels carried the Union Jack at the fore in recognition of the gift from the English Government. A large number of people were unhoused by forest fires in York and Pennsylvania, andaremaking calls fonissistance. The cultivation of the Australian black wattle has been commenced extensively in Southern California. A story was current when the mail left that J. Gould was financially crippled. The suspensionof the Oriental Bank caused decided sensation in San Francisco among the resident financial and commercial men and English visitors. Several mining and land transactions were summarily stopped. The local banks are involved only to a small extent. The Bank of California loses 40,000d015. Ex-Senator Blame stands the best chance for the presidential nomina- 1 tion on the republican ticket at the Chicago Convention next month. Delegates from all sections of the Union are largely instructed in his favour. Supplementary Chinese Restriction Bill, correcting defects in the existing law, passed— lB6 against 13. Henry George, author of "Progress and Poverty," was banqueted in New York on his return from England. He described the working classes of England as almost inaccessible to argument owing to dense ignorance. The middle classes, he said, generally received his lectures with favour, and his land policy had taken firm foothold among them. James R. Keene, leading stockbroker and racehorse owner, has failed. Eads, the ship canal projector, has returned to New York, and reports that his scheme for a canal at Tehuantepei has been taken up by English capitalists. A great working men's demonstration has been held at New York in favour of eight hours labour. Mormon emigrants from Europe ar*e arriving by thousand?. An appeal is being made to AmericanIrishmen on behalf of Mr ParnelFs fund for the support of Irish members in Parliament. Thousands of Chinamen are out of work in British Columbia, and are committing depredations on life and property. A terrible tire occurred at Panama, which burnt two blocks of stores and the market house. Loss, $500,000. A mob armed with revolvers commenced plundering, and the owners of buildings fired on them, killing several.
