MINING NEWS.

The rain on Tnesday find Wednesday last fre-hencd the supply of water, and tiie batten is now going full force with 20 stampers for the Colonist, 15 for file New Find, and 5 on stuff from the F Claim.

Colonist. — Owing to the quantity of water met with in the winze sinking had to be discontinued last Saturday, after a depth of 3()ft had been reached Connection with the low levrojvill now have to be effected hy rising, but this work must remain in abeyance for some little time, as the drive below has yet to be extended about 40ft before the reef will be intersected. Work in that level has been at a standstill for a few days, the contractors having given up after driving about 70ft. No time will be lost in resuming operations. Stoping is going on as usual over tlje intermediate level, a number of men being still employed at that work. The project of letting the blocking out of the reef by the ton has, we understand, been abandoned, and in all probability it will now be lot by the fathom, a method which is likely td prove more satisfactory.

Canadian. — A place i§ now being cleared near the mouth of the Colonist level for the erection of a hopper, a tender for which' has already been accepted. Until "this work js, cpmpleted (which will be ns quickly as possible^ it is not considered advisable to send any

more quartz to, the battery, as it enn only lie done now at considerable inconvenience.

Hgko.-— The drive across the Jbi# reef has now been carried through more than 20ft of solid quartz, ami there are indications of fche-foofcwsill being close at hand, The low level is in about 30ft, and at fifteen or twenty more the reef should be reached.

Diamond Gully.— Sinking is still going- on on the reef in the old low level, ami during the week some excellent stone has been got, a portion of which may be classed as fair picked stuff. The country is still very hard nnil the water troublesome, consequently the progress made is rather slow. At present only two men are engaged on the work, but it is a mistake "to attempt to sink in such ground with only one shift. Truer dennoniy would be displayed were three Shifts employed, for then there would be less time lost in baling water and in other unnecessary ways than is now the case. Since sinking commenced about 70lbs of fair picked stone has, we understand, been obtained. This, from the small amountof work that it has been possible for two men to do in such ground, must bo regarded as highly satisfactory Nrw Find. — Work in the different parts of the mine is p ogressing satisfactorily. The winze on the No. 2 reef has now been sunk to a depth of about Of) ft, and good payable stone is still being got. The roof averages 3ft in thickness, and, from present appearances, there is every reason to believe that the gold will be c.u'ricd through to the low level, which will cut the reef about 30ft below. That level is now within 35ft of the lode, and as the country ha 3 recently got much easier the distance ought to be accomplished in a fortnight or little more. Good progress is being made with the rise in the Arizona level, and in the winze going down to connect with it, there being now less than 25ft between the two. The reef in both places looks as well as usual. From the stopes crushing stuff of good average quality is being got. Eureka. — The wire tramway is now nearly completed, and in a week or ten days will be ready for the transmission of stuff. Tilings m the mine continue to look healthy, and by the cmi" the tram is finished everything underground will be in good working order. Waiohongomai. — The trestling over the County tramway has now been erected, and a start made with tho driving of the low level. There is nothing of importance to record concerning the upper workings. Inverness. — As was reported last week payable stone has been struck in the rise from the low level, but owing to the broken and treacherous nature of the ground there met with, it was considered advisable to sink instead of rise the remainder of the distance between the levels. Rising has therefore been discontinued and sinking is now going on in the upper level. Wellington. — The drive on the leader is still being pushed on, but the.re is no change of any consequence to report. Tho stone continues to show a sprinkling of gold at each breaking down.

"Vermont. — Work which had been suspended for a few days was again started in the beginning of the week, and the sinking of the winze to prove the quality or the leader below the floor of the drive is now being proceeded with. As far as. sunk on, the prospects may be regarded as very encouraging.

Phqsnix. — A drive is now boinqr pui in some distance southward of the former workings, near the Inverness boumlnry, to cut and prove the same loader in the centre of the claim, it is expected the vein will be in hand in a few days. Tho quartz from the old drive is still lying by the tramway, there having- been no opportunity yet of getting it treated at the baltory.
