MINING NEWS. (From the " Coromandel Mail. )

Tokatea. — The tributors Knox and M'Neil have had another nice little crushing, and obtained 50 ozs. of gold ; this party although not as fortunate as to get stuff like Parker, have for year.s Leen able to find very lich stone, and their average earnings have been first-class. The main low level is still going on very slowly j the contractors have not yutsucceeded in cutting the soft channel of country expected to bn found on foot wall of big reef ; this goes partly to show that the said reef has a greater underlie than was expected.

Barisouk View. — Park's party of tvibuters had a grand crushing of G4 pounds of specimens for the extraordinary return of IJ)2 ozs. retorted jj^olcl. This is from the same leader from which they crushed 145 ozs. from four tons of quartz a lew weeks ago. It is hard to say how long this will la.st, but the richness is undoubted. The Harbour View has been exceedingly rich in patches for many years past, but of late it was thought to bo pretty well worked out, but this new find contradicts that, and is one more proof ot the impossibility of knowing when a golden 1 eof is really worked out. Ko doubt after this many pieces of ground supposed to be thoroughly tested, u ill have another trial.

K.u'ANoa. — The new manager, Captain Argall, is having a trial parcel taken from the reef from various parts, intending to crush it to enable him to form an opinion as to whether it will pay or not. No doubt the. plan proposed is very good so far as it goes, and would be a h'rst-rate guide in testing a copper lode, but in this country the golden lodes arc quite different, and will require a greater trial average to find the value of a reef. For instance, he might take out a portion of a reef containing gold worth «50s. or 100s. per ton. Would he average the reef from that ? Perhaps the next ton or two Mould not go an ounce. The late crushing from the Harbour View is a sample of what we mean. We believe the only fair test is to take out a considerable block of the reef, casing away what is k i UiViii to be worthless, crush the balance, and aveiage the result. Fossicking here and there n\ ill never pay any company.

I Matawwi.— -The only work going on in this mine is driving level both ways on reef in sou thorn end ; still getting good crushing material in northern end. Expect to touch .shot gold almost immediately. The paddock Ls full. Quarts ready for battery as .soon as the road is available.

Matawai, No. 2.— The manager reports getting a little gold in reef two feet thick. Nothing very rich at present.

Uniok Beach. — The manager is pushing on the various prospecting works. The results are very encouraging.

JrsT-iN-TiME. — We regret to &cc that this mine and machinery is to be sold on Thursday next, at 10 a.m.

Royal Oak. — Driving on the reef at low level is still continned without any marked change.

Cokby. — The manager reports obtaining a little gold from the leader marked in the surface level. The leader is about six inches thick, and looks well.
