A kanj>somely-bound volume of 180 pages is tlio latest form in which Mr Griffin's consular reports have been submitted to the public. Thus collected, wo arc better able to measure the extent and great value of Mr Griffin's endeavours to make known in the United States the resources and institutions of this colony. The book only comprises a selection from Mr Griffin's reports, but an enumeration of the subjects will sufficiently indicate the practical character of his work. After a general description of the colony — its area, geographical position, population, political and social institutions andrevenues, achapterisdevoted to financial and general statistics. Then follow papers on Australasian Banking, Mail Routes to Australasia, Harbour Accommodation, The Coalfields, The Goldfields, The Timber Trade, The Iron and Steel Trade, The Watch and Clock Trade, Manganese, Wool, Woollen Manufactures, New Zealand Cattle, Frozen and Canned 'Meat, Canned Provisions, Fisheries, Kauri Gum, Fungns, Flax, liabbit-skins,Tanckahaßark, Cement, Agricultural Products, Horse-breeding, American Woodenware, and Systems of Credit. Additional value is given to these papers by the fact that the statistical information has been brought up to date by Dr. Hector and Mr Brown, the Registrar General. A valuable map, showing roads, railway and steamer routes and distances, has also been attached. The work is issued in conformity with a special resolution of Parliament, and it is intended to circulate a large number of copies in England, through the AgentGeneral's office. The impartiality of the authorship, and the very readable shape in \\ Inch these facts about the colony arc presented, will materially enhance the value of of the book as an authority upon the resources of New Zealand. The typographical part of the work has been well executed at the Government printing office. A few copies are handsomely bound in red morocco, the remainder in the edition in red cloth. It is intended by the Government to send a large number for circulation through the Agent-General's oHice, London.
