MIN ING NEWS.

Battery. — The usual weekly cleaning up took place on Monday last ami the following are the results in amalgam :—: —

The exact return from tbe Canadian crushing last week was s"2ozs 7<lwts of retorted gold from 48 trucks of quartz;. New Find. — Operations are going on as usual in tlie different parts of the mine, but no change of any importance has taken place during the week. The No. 2 winze is down about 58 feet, and the reef is fall Bft wide. Gold in paying quantity is still showing, arid the appearance of the stone is favourable i'oi its continuance. The sinking <Jf the other winzp to 1 corinect with the ruse (iv ( iv the Arizona level lias been let at 3 ( Js 8<! per foot, and the work has be'e'ii started. The rise and other workings in thai lex el continue to yield stuff of good quality, and from the stopes in the upper portion of the level quartz of fair grade is also being obtained. Tight country is still being encountered in the low level.

CoLonist. — A considerable numbei of the wages mon have been d'soharged. This step is preliminary to the introduction of a new system of working, whereby it is anticipated, we presume, that the mine expenses will be reduced. That the result of this system willpnn ? satisfactory is exceedingly doubtful, but its introduction has been decided upon, and tenders will; we believe, be immediately invited for taking oUt a large quantity of stuff at per ton. There* arc still about twenty men employed in the stopes and tithdr workings. The \Viusso that is beinK stink to meet the ne> low level is ddwit about 30 feet. The reef is large-, being about 5 feet in width, and there is still a fair show of geld in it. In the drive below the contractors have met with some tight country. Tile face is now in over 70 feet.

Canadian.— The Satisfactory yield from the late crushing gives proof of the payable nature of the reef, the development of which will nowj we believe, be vigorously proceeded with. The winze in the upper level has been sunk to a depth of 12 feet} the reef being from 4 to 5 feet in width and producing etoue of similar quality to that just crushed. As soon as practicable the face of the Colonist intermediate 1 level will be carried in under the winze-, and, when communication betwen the two is effected, a considerable block of the reef will be opened up, and a large quantity of payable stuff be at once available. Tenders havebeed called for the erection of a hopper and shoot) and by the time these are completed everything in the mine will be in readiness for. work on an extended scale.

hinder"^ the work, only a few feet having as yet been sunk. The vein is about 2 feet in thickness, find since sinking was commenced has yielded some excellent stone. What, however, with tiie water and the tight country, something .good will be required to p°y costs, but it may he assumed that as soon as it is proved that the gold is likely to go down other means of working the ground will be adopted. "Since the foregoing was written there has been another breaking down of the reef, and the show of gold is even better than before.

Waiokongomai. — Owing to the abrupt nature of the ground and the limited space at the mouth of the former low drive it has been considered necessary to commence a new one at a lower level. A place for it is now being cleared away at a convenient height above the tramway, the bridging of which for the mullock tip is also being done. No cross-cutting will be necessary to strike the reef, which is expected to be found close to the surface, and should the country prove to be as favourable as in the drive above, a very short time will suffice to carry in the low level to the supposed shot of yold left there. In the surface workings near to the Wellington boundary a little gold is still being got.

Wellington. — The leader is still yielding some fair stone, and at each breaking down gold, more or less, is seen. The vein is at proseufc pboul 8 inches in thickness.

Inverness. — Good news is to hand from this name. In the rise from the low level gold was struck yesterday at a height of about 45 feet from tho drive below. The reef, we nnderstaud, is 3ft in width, and some of the quartz broken down is of excellent quality. Some 35 feet more has yet to be risen to the upper level, where good stone was left in the floor of the drive. There is thus almost a certainty of a continuance of the gold upwards in the rise, which, when through, will open up a lar»e block of payable reef.
