MINING NEWS. [FROM TH E "C OROMANDEL MAIL."]
iMATAW.w, — Phis claim is constantly improving ns it is worked. At the present time the manager is driving both ways on the reef, and in the south end ho is getting stuff worth from three to four ounces per ton, and he has got that for the last fifty feet. The surface drive above is some thirty feet ahead, carrying good gold, and proving the shot of gold to be a wide one. The reef is very large, ranging fiom three to seven feet thick in places in the other end. They have a largo reef, but no gold has shown for the last twonty feet, and none is expected for some distance yet, but there is gold on the surface where they are driving. We tru^t the county will push on the road from the mine to the battery with all possible despatch, as there is no doubt this is by far the most important mine in the district, and by assisting them to crush it may be the means of opening up a new district ; at any rate more men would be employed, whereas now they cannot work for want of space to stow the quart/.. The other mines in this neighbourhood are also kept back for want of a road.
Union Bkauh. — The manager has opened out at 35 feet down. The winze on New Reef, which is of fair size, shows good pretty freely. He is confident of having a payable block to take out. He intends to rise from the 180 feet level, and slope out from these the small leaders on the Green Harp, which is also looking well ; a few very rich stones being obtained from there.
Hartjouk Vikw. — Tribute is still looking well, and there is every probability of gold being obtained from the stopes equal to the last lot.
Blue Peter.— Several pounds of very nice specimen stone have oeen got in the stopcs since last crushing. The leader is small, but will pay well.
Matawai, No. 2.— Several men are diligently engaged tracing up Vaughan's reef, and have every prospect of getting a rich claim.
Argonaut.— This claimfto the north of Matawai stands remarkably well for their reef, which must strike throueh the claim.
Royal Oak.—- The reef in the low level is still looking remarkably well. The manager is confident he is not far from gold.
