London, April 29.— The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report :— Wool.— The sales opened on 29th inst. at an average decline of 5 per cent, on last sales closing rates, except cross-bred, which is firmer. Up to' dato 360,000 bales have arrived ; 400,000 admissible ; 60,000 bales have been sent to the manufacturing district direct. The opening catalogue contained 56,000 bales, but was not a representative one. Wheat. — Market quiet. Adelaide is worth 43s 6d and New Zealand 39s Od per 4961b5. Adelaide f.a.q. is worth, c.i.f. to arrive, 41s per 4Solbs. Tallow. — Market quiet. Mutton is worth 40s and beef 37s per cwt. Leather.— Market firm. Beef hides are worth ll^d per lb. . New Zealand Hemp.— Market quiet. Pine is worth f27 per ton nominally. London, April 30.— A telegram from Havannah, the capital of Cuba, states that a terrible catastrophe has occurred there. The powder magazine at the arsenal exploded, and the shock also caused a gasometer in the neighbourhood to blow up. Immense damage was done to the adjoining buildings, and a number of persons in the vicinity lost their lives. London, April 30. — The catalogue at today's wool sales comprised 11,300 bales. A good demand was experienced. London, May 1. — The marriage ot Prince Louis of Battenburg with the Princess Victoria of Hesse - Darmstadt was celebrated yesterday at Darmstadt with great ceremony. Her Majesty Queen Victoria, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and the German Cio\\n Prince and Princess, were present. The Queen did not attend the banquet uhich followed, on account of the recent death of the Duke of Albany. London, May 1. — In the House of Commons last night, a bill to legalise the cremation of dead bodies was rejected after debate. Lon don, May 1. — The Rev. Sydney Linton has been consecrated to the See of llivorina. The ceremony took place at St. Paul's, and amongst those present were the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Bishops ot Ely, Lincoln, Oxfjrd, St. Albans, Lilchrield, Sodor and Man, Nottingham, and Algonia. London, May 1. — One and three. quarter millions of the last Victorian loan lias been inscribed. Mr Dal ton, tutor to the sons of the Piince of Wales, has privately published a pamphlet advoc iting the federation of the English colonies. London, May 1. — The Russian loan of 15,000,000 has been subscribed twelvefold. Mr Stanley Hill has submitted a motion to Parliament in favour of the federation of the Empire. London, May 1. — Last night Sir H. B. Loch, the new Governor of Victoria, was entertained at a banquet by Mr Murray Smith, Agent-General for that colony. In replying to the toast of his health, Sir Henry enforced upon those present the necessity of fostering the union between England and the colonies. He leaves for Australia via Plymouth and Hobart on the 28th instant. In the House of Lords, on Monday, the Earl of Rosebery intends to move for the production of all papers in connection with the recidivistes question. The committee appointed by the German Reichstag to report on the Socialist Bill present an unfavourable report, and have ieject:d the measure. London, May 1. — At the wool sale to-day the auction was steady, and a firm tone prevailed. The demand is not active. 3,500 bales were withdrawn fiom sale since the opening of the series. The Egyptian Blue-book shows that the English Government has frequently urged Gordon Pasha to withdraw from Khartoum, also that his despatches are incoherent and inconsistent. ° A large section of the English press assert that the despatches from Gordon Pasha do not justify Mr Gladstone's optimism with regard to Khartoum. The French Government ha.« definitely notified its acceptance of a proposal that a Conference on the state of affairs in Egypt should be held, but without waiving its demand that the Mhole Egyptian question shall be open for discussion. A Press Association message fays : — The Powers have agreed to accept the English proposal for a Conference on the affairs of Egypt. London, May 2.— The prospectus of the proposed Company to take up land in the Northern Territory of Australia, projected by Mr Mclntyre, of South Australia will be issued on Monday. The capital will be £120,000, and the first issue of shares will cover two-thirds of the capital. An excel lent provisional Board of Directors has been appointed. Despatches relating to the Soudan were laid before both Houses of Parliament yesterday. Among the latest is one from Earl Granville to Major-General Gordon dated April 23, instructing the latter to state what force would be required to eJibct the rescue of the garrison at Khartoum, and the other towns in the Soudan that are infested by the Arab rebels. London, May 2. —Earl Derby, Secretary of State for the Colonies, has been created a Knight of the Order of the Garter. Prices continue steady, but without active demand. The catalogue at to-day's auction comprised 10,000 bales. "Cross-breds are firmer. French buyers are operating more freely. The John Elder's meat has arrived in excellent condition. Prime New Zealand mutton is now selling at fid per pound. Australian wheat is unsaleable at a nominal price of 41s 3d. London, May 3. It is supposed that the bombs found on Daley were intended to be thrown in the House of Commons, or at Lord Randolph Churchill's meeting in Birmingham. A bottle of nitro-glycerine has been discovered in Egans garden. It is suggested that Sir Hemy Loch, as Governor of Victoria, should be specially authorised to give the Royal assent to any colonial legifclation intended to secure the exclusion of recidivistes. Lord Derby is expected to make an important speech on thie question on Monday. The well-known firm, Dalgoty, Duroz & Co, general merchants, Lombard-street, has been converted into a joint stock company with a capital of £4,000,000 ? In the House of Commons to-day, Sir Michael Hicks-Beach gave notice of a motion censuring the Government for the delay which has occured in arrangements for rescuing General Gordon and the garrison at Khartoum. The Oriental Bank has had to suspend payment, owing to the rapid withdarwal of deposits. The "Times" states that all its serious losses have already been announced, and that the depositors will probably be safe though the shareholders will remain liable for a million and a-half . Mr. Thomas Welton is the provisional liquidator. The Melbourne office has been ordered to stop payment.
The steamship State of Florida, trading botween Glasgow and America, is several days overdue. A lifeboat boating the name of the vessel has been picked up in the middle of the Atlantic, and much anxiety is felt regarding the fate of tho passengers and crew.
I London, May 4.— A private bill for mI rorporating the Oriental Bank as a Limited Liability Company is now boforo Parliament, and has passed its second reading in the House of Commons. Mr Maurice Lyons's Northern Territory Pastoral Company of Australia is now announced privately, with a capital of one million, of which it is proposed to raise ono hundred and fifty thousand pounds, the balance being made up by debentures. There is an excellent list of directors, with the Duke of Manchester as Chairman. The latter sails by the Messagerics steamer for Australia on Wednesday. The scene of the Company's operations is to bo in the neighbourhood of Port Darwin, not Carpentaria. A bale of Australian hops ox steamer Sutiei has been sold for £7.
Paths, May '2. Li Fong Pao, the present Chinese Envoy at Berlin, has been appointed to replace the Marquis Tseng as Ambassador to France, and will at once open parleying with the French Government with a view to a pacific, solution of the Tonquin difficulty. Maurid, May I.— The police have effected the arrest at Barcelona of an Anarchist, in whose possession a largo quantity of dynamite wab found. The prisoner has since confessed he intended to have used the explosives for destroying railway lines.
Cairo, April 30. Dksi'Atchkn have been received from the Governor of Berber stating thai he still retains command of the town with a small garrison, but that assistance is immediately and urgently needed. Lonuon, May 1.-in the House of Commons to-day Mr Gladstone announced that the French Government had accepted the proposal to hold a conference on Egyptian affairs, but required that thcic should be an exchango of views between England and France beforehand as to the subjects to be discussed. Mr Gladstone further stated that the Turkish Government has not yet replied to the proposal, but that the other European Governments have accepted the same. The Hew Sydney Linton, new ly appointed Bishop of Riverina, New South Wales, was consecrated to-day at St. Paul's Cathedral, with the customary ceremony. A man named MacDonnel, who is know n to be a " centre " of the present Fenian organisation, has been arrested at Weclnesbury, in Staffordshire. Tokonto (Canada), April 30. — A plot to destroy Parliament Buildings in this city has been frustrated. .Several powerful dynamite cartridges "with fuses attached ready for firing -were discovered this evening in the basement of the building, and were promptly destroyed. The affair caused intense excitement here. No clue to the guilty parties has yet been obtained.
