THE DUNEDIN RACES.
Racecourse, February 21. Champagne Stakes for two-year-olds, a sweep of lOsovs each, with loOsovs added. — Hon. McLeans eh f Lady Evelyn (Cotton), 1 j Mr Cutts's b o, by King of ClubsWaterspout, 2 ; Mr Webbs br c, by Albany —Wave, 3. Time, lmin. 20£secs. Of 648 investors on the totalisator, 423 were on the winner. Maiden Plate of 1003ovs M 1 mile and ahalf,—Mr Pollock's b m Miss Griffith, syrs, 9st lib (M. Allen), 1 ; Mr Fuller's eh q Holderness, aged, 9st 31b (Derritt), 2. Toko, Coupon, Modea, Vinco, and Youth also ran. Of £646 in the inside totalisator, only £14 was on the winner, and 120 oat of £360 outside. Time, 2mins. 51 sees. Stewards' Purse, Welter Handicap of 120sovs. Seven furlongs. — Mr Cutts' b h Sou-wester, 3yrs, Bst lOlbs (Thompson), 1 ; Mr Stephenson's eh q Taiaroa, 4yrs, Bst 10 lbs (Waddell), 2;. Mr Bates's eh m Minerva, 4yrs, 9st (Derrett), 3. Time 1 mm. 33secs. A hack race concluded an excellent day's sport. Mr Driver, M.H.R., the judge, resigned his pose after the Cup race. Racecourse, February 22. The weather to-day was really glorious, and the attendance for the second day large Proceedings opened with the Tally-ho Handicap of SOsovs. ; one mile and a-half. Hercules, list 121b (Sheehan) ... 1 Little John, lOst (Pole) 2 Karerea, 9st 51b ( J. Colton ). . .' ... 3 Rocket, lOst 101b (Ross) 0 Betting : 7 to 4 against Hercules, 2 to 1 Karerea, 3to 2 others. All four acceptors faced the starter. Karerea darted off with the lead, but was soon pulled back, allowing Little John and Karerea to cut out the running. In passing the Stand all four were well togethei\ and jumping beauti fully, Rocket gaining considerably at each hurdle. At the far side of the j course Hercules was taken to the front and made the pace a cracker. Entering the straight he was three lenghts ahead, but the others coming well under the whip, a pretty light resulted in favour of Sheehan's mount by three lenghts, Little John beating Rarerea by a head for second place. Time, 3tn llsec. Not a single mistake was made, and all the horses were nin clean out.
Jockey Club Handicap. ' Lady Emma 1 Vanguard 2 Hippodamia 3 City Stakes Handicap of 5 soys., with 200 added j for two-year-olds ; five furlongs. Watersprite colt, Bst 21b (Brown) ... 1 Lady Evelyn, 9st (Cotton) 2 Wave filly, 7sl 51b (Stralton) ... 3 Exatos was scratched. Lady Evelyn was served up very warm for this race, 14 to 10 being freely laid on her. Cutts's colt got slightly the best of the start from the favourite, Wave filly being left at the post. The Watereprite colt always maintained his position, the whip being out to Evelyn before the straight was reached. The race, however, was never in doubt. Watersprite eventually winning by a length and a half ; Wave close up. Time lmin. 7secs. Dividend, £3 10s Gd. The Novel Race Handicap, of lOOsovs, one mile, was won by Trumpeter, the second place being taken by Marchioness Niel and third by Don Jose. Whitback, Frospero, Mollie Bawn and Minerva also ran. Trumpeter was the favourite, and won easily in lmin. lOjsecs. Of £1,641 in the totalisator £472 was on the winner. The Suburban Welter Handicap of 150sovs, 1 mile and a furlong, was won by Taiaroa, Tim Whiffler being second, and Jilt third. Master Agnes also ran. After the first quarter of a-mile, Taiaroa took the lead, and nothing else was afterwards in it. Dividend, £1 28s Gd. Time, 2m ins. 3secs. Tramway Plate of 80sovs. , three-quarters of a mile ; weight for age. — Lady Evelyn, 1 ; Kubina, 2. Cheviot and Siesta being scratched, the race was reduced to one between the above two fillies. Lady Evelyn won with a little to spare by a length. Time, 1 mm. 19secs. Dividend, £1 19s 6d. A Hack Race for 25sovs. brought the proceedings to a conclusion. It was won from eight others by Huntingtown, a dividend of t24 0s 6d being paid on him.
February 23. Hurdle Race. Karera ... ... ... ... 1 Hercules 2 Won by three lengths. Little John and Pocket also ran.
Hopeful Stakes. Watersprite Colt 1 Lady Evelyn 2 Rubina an indifferent third.
Marshall Memorial Stakes. Tasman 1 Lady Emma 2 The Poet 3 A grand race. Won by a length. Time, 3mins 50aecs.
Foreury Handicap of 25050v5., 1£ mile. Vanguard 1 Taiaroa 2 Salvage 3 The Flying Handicap of lOOsovs. was won by Nonsense, Tim Whiffler being ?econd and Minerva third. The Benevolent Scurry was won by Jennie out of a field of eight, but thero was a small divilend. The Consolation Handicap, SOsovs. , was won by Hippodamia easily. Eight started, the best known of which were Minerva, Holderness, and Marchioness Neil. About £7,000 went through the botalisator during the day, bringing up a botal for the three days of i 27, 000.
