The New Archbishop of Sydney—Conflicting Rumours. London, February 1. — The announcement that Dr. Moran had been selected by the Council of Cardinals to succeed the late Archbishop Vaughan, Sydney, is premature. The report that Dr. Moran had been summoned to Rome for the purpose of being created a 6ardinal, is unfounded. The name of Dr. Walsh (President of May-
nooth College), Dr. Moran, and Dr. Murray (Bishop of Maitland), will on Monday be submitted by propaganda to the Pope for his approval.
Australian Letters. London, February Ist.— Mr Fawcett, Postmaster General, has determined that in future Australian lettors will be sent by the first outgoing steamer, irrespective of any directions marked on the letter indicative by which mail service it is desired to have them sent.
Deputy Governor of the Soudan. Lieutenant Colonel Stewart who acted as Assistant Adjutant of the cavalry division to tho expeditionary force sent to Egypt in ISB2, has been appointed Deputy Governor of the Soudan.
A Duplicate Cable. Sir Julius Vogel is making good progress with his scheme to form a public company to undertake the construction and laying of duplicate submarine cables between England and Australia. There will be no difficulty in securing the requisite amount of capital for this undertaking upon advantageous terms. The conpany in course of formation by Sir Julius Vogel offers to undertake the work on condition that the Australian Colonies guarantee a subsidy ot £4,000,000.
The Australasian Federation Question. The Queen's speech, which is to be delivered at the opening of Parliament to-mor-row makes allusion to the agitation which has been going on in the Australian colonies in the direction of federation The Auckland Society of Arts have decided to hold their next bxhibition during the last woek in April next. In addition to the prizes and certificates already offered, the Society will award silver and bronze medals for distinctive excellence and superior merit in pupils' studies, students' or amateurs' works in oil and in water-colour, and for original designs of special artistic excellence. An extra silver medal, the gift of Mrs J. M. Clark, is to be given to the competitor who secures the largest number of first-class prizes and certificates ; and the ladies of the Auckland School of Art will be favoured by a special gift for the best work they contribute. All w orks of art for competition must be sent in on the 10th April, to allow full time for examination before other exhibits are received.
