Ox Saturday at ei<;ht o'clock there was n lire in High street, by which wore destroyed the premises occn pied by Mr Alfred Simpson , booksoller ; Mr Church, draper ; Mr Dolman, grocor ; and Mr Smith, boot and shoemaker. The line new building 1 of the Empire Hotel prevented the spread of the flames in one direction, tho brick wall of Peterson, jeweller, in tho other. The heavy rain also assisted by extinguishing the large masses of burning material which fell on neighbouring roofs. The Fire Brigade worked hard for three hours. The damage is estimated at about £10,000. Mr Delman was uninsured. The following are said to be the insurances : —Mr H. J. Hall, on premises, occupied by Messrs Church and Smith, £1,300 ; otiice not ascertained. Mr Smith's stock is insured in the London and Liverpool for £500 ; Standard, 1.100 : Union, £500, ot which £250isre-inf-ureil, but it is not known in what office. Mr Church's stock is insured in the New Zealand for £500 ; Mercantile Union, £500 ; fixtures insured for £1.10 ; ofh'ce not known. Mr Simpson's building is insured for C5OO in the Imperial, £500 in the South British ; stock, £1,000 in the Ph<mix, £1,000 in New Zealand, £1,000 in the Norwich Union, £500 in the Guardian, t'soo in tho Norwich Union, £500 in the Koyal, £250 in the United, £500 in the Mercantile Union ; the fittings insured for £100 ; oflice not known.

Later. The following are additional or corrected insurances :— \V. J. TTall, buildings, LSOO in the Union Ofiice, of which L 250 is re-insured in the United, and L 225 in the Hamburg-Magdeburg. Churches fixtures, L3O in the Australian Mercantile Union. The Victorian had L5OO over Simpson's (bookseller) stock in addition to the insurance already telegraphed, but the Australian Mercantile had no risk over this stock of LI, OOO, for which it was insured in the Union. L3OO was re-insured in London and Lancashire, and L'2.")o of the LlOO held over the same stock by the New Zealand A\a«* iivinsurcd in the HamburgMagdebui". The total of all the insurances is L 10.250.
