THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT. ARMY.

In the Auckland Provincial District (says an Exchange) there are 21 Counties, having nine Hidings in each County, finding work for 189 persons ; each Riding has three Road Boards giving- a total of 567 R->ard Boards, and each of these finds work for five persons, or a total of 2,835. Added to these there as County officials 21 collectors and 2l clerks, as Road Board officials 567 collectors, 567 valuators, 567 clerics, and 21 engineers. The offices of collector, valuator and clerk arc probably combined in most cases, but, even allowing that to be so, the grand total of this list of governing representatives and officials would be appalling had we the courage to tot it up.
