ANOTHER FENIAN EXECUTED.
Dublin, December 18. — Poole was hanged for the murder of John Kenny within the walls of Richmond prison at S.o o'clock this morning. Last night the sentries guarding the prison wee doubled, and an adequate force kept in reserve in case of emergency. Before six o'clock a few knots of men and women gathered outside the gaol wall 1 ?. Later the numbers in creased until a crowd assembled, women being largely in majority. Poole slept at intervals last night and arose about six. He had a light breakfast, and then busied himself in his devotions, reading the " Key of Heaven M and the ' ' Lives of the Saints " and praying. After a short time he appeared refreshed, and seemed in iaiiiy good spirits. He then proceeded with the attendants towards the chapel, situated in the centre of the prison, close to the cell just quitted. At the chapel he met Father Donegan. The trio knelt and prayed. The last sacrament was administered to the condemned man. In a few minutes the signal was given, and Father Donegan led the doomed] Fenian to the corridor, where Jones, an amateur executioner, fixed the straps pinioning his elbows. Twenty paces brought them to the prison yard, where the scaffold stood. The noose was thrown lightly over the beam. As Poole walked to the place of death in the dim of the morning light, he appeared to better advantage than when seen in the dook, with his short, firm, well-knit figure erect, and his manly countenance pale but determined. On the scaflbld the hangman guided Poole under the beam, placing the noose in position. He then moved to the lever, and in an instant the bolt was drawn and the victim disappeared. The rope jerked and shook violently, indicating a struggle beneath, but in a little while all was quiet, and the career of Joseph Poole was ended. The black flag was run up as soon as the , trap gave way, and the Avatchful crowd outside the walls gave vent to a wailing cry. Men murmured prayers, and the! women crossed themselves, and some of the latter fell upon their knees.
