1883. ONE MORE YEAR.

One more ! We may have felt it going ; Wo may have had to wait until it passed ; Or, like a phantom sprite, it may have cast No shadow— passod without our knowing. One move ! Like drop upon the ocean, It 'mongst the groat eternity of years Has fallen, to commingle with its peers, That nevermore shall know of motion. One more ! But what the whence and whither ? What are tho years, that wo shall oall them gone ? Are they the actors, we tho lookers-on? Or aro we moving onward all together? One more! And is not Time abiding? Is it not we, and not the years, that pass ; Just as it is the sand, and not the glass, That runs, uniting and dividing I One more! 0, list to the delusion ! One gone would surely mean one less to go. And there would come a time, if this were so. When T,ime would roach its own conclusion. One more ! An ogo or a nation, As myriad others may have, dono beforo. May sink into the mystic Nevermore ; But Time shall over be Duration. Onemoro ! The worldsmayceasetheirshining, And leave their orbits, making Chaos king. Till life bo stamped and star vedfrom everything ; But Time shall never know deolining. One more ! How glibly it is spoken I We think to measure Time by Heaven's brow ; But ah ! it is one solid, boundless Now, " That evermore remains unbroken ! i • : Jas,' Simpson. Auckland, 1883,
